FDR: Seventy Years On

The final portrait, April 12, 1945

Chillin' with the Roosevelts, 2013
"The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today. Let us move forward with strong and active faith."

That was the closing of FDR's final speech. He would not live to deliver it. Moments after writing those words, he collapsed and died. The date was April 12, 1945.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt recedes even further into the mists history this morning. Seventy years ago today, he was at his winter White House in Warm Springs, Georgia. The month before he had come back from a grueling, fourteen thousand mile journey to the Yalta Conference in the Soviet Union, where he, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin had discussed the fate of post-war Europe.

On his return to Washington it was obvious to everyone in his circle that the boss was seriously ill.  In the preceding year he had lost close to fifty pounds, his hands trembled and there was a noticeable slur in his speech. His personal physician, Admiral Ross McIntyre, thought that a couple of weeks nestled within the leafy pines of Warm Springs would bring the president back to form - as it had so many times in the past.

The last photograph
Early in the afternoon of April 12, 1945, Roosevelt had just completed writing an address which he planned to give via radio the following evening for the Democrats' annual Jackson Day Dinner. There were five people in the room with him, his cousins Daisy Suckley and Laura Delano, his valet, Arthur Prettyman, the artist, Elizabeth Shoumatoff, who was painting his portrait, and Lucy Mercer Rutherford, a woman with whom Franklin had had a brief affair over a quarter century before. On this spring day in 1945, they we're just two old friends. They made each other laugh, something Franklin needed now more than any other time in his life. She also reminded him of his athletic youth, before the onslaught of polio withered his legs, leaving him completely paralyzed .

Without warning the president put his right hand to the back of his neck and said to Miss Suckley, "I have a terrific pain in the back of my head". With those final words he lost consciousness. His limp body was carried by Prettyman to his bedroom, where, less than an hour later, at 3:35 PM, Franklin D. Roosevelt was pronounced dead. He was sixty-three.

Seventy years later, the legacy of FDR is on life support in this country. There aren't many people still standing that have a conscious memory of what life was like in America before his grand experiment in unprecedented social engineering ushered in a New Deal for the American people. On the night of his inauguration in 1933, his outspoken distant cousin, Alice Roosevelt Longworth (Theodore's daughter), told him, "Franklin, if you fail you'll be the last Democratic president." The new president didn't miss a beat in his reply: "Alice, if I fail I'll be the last president - period".

It amuses me to no end whenever I hear Barack Obama described by the right wing SCREAM machine as "the most liberal president in history". He isn't. Truth be told, he's not even a close third. Not only was Roosevelt our most liberal president - he was a radical - at a time when radical change was desperately needed.

Master Franklin 1890
The obscene economic inequality that preceded the Administration of FDR, has risen from the depths of hell and is making a comeback in the United States at this very moment. We've pretty much forgotten all we owe him. Think about it: The youngest voter to cast his or her ballot for FDR in 1932 would this year be 104. My mother, who will turn eighty-four on August 5, was in the eighth grade when Franklin Delano Roosevelt passed into eternity seventy years ago today. We suffer from historical amnesia. They tell us that those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it. Take a look at the American economic landscape on April 12, 2015. It's happening. Go back to sleep.

Maybe it's a mere coincidence that history is not emphasized more in American high schools these days. Maybe it's not. One thing is beyond certainty: A lot of people who vote are in desperate need of a history lesson. Most of them are unable to identify President Roosevelt in a photograph - or even his image on the dime. That's a pretty pathetic situation.

A young man on his way
A google news search this morning informs me that there is not one paper, anywhere in this nation, that is taking note of this milestone anniversary today. FDR is not even mentioned in passing. That's pretty pathetic as well.

"Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me—and I welcome their hatred. I should like to have it said of my first Administration that in it, the forces of selfishness and of lust for power met their match. I should like to have it said of my second Administration that in it, these forces met their master."

-Franklin D. Roosevelt, during the 1936 campaign

Can you imagine a politician - Democratic or Republican - making such an utterance today? With a small handful of noble exceptions, I can't.

The Frankster
I often make a pilgrimage to the FDR Library and Museum in Hyde Park, NY. Being a resident of New York's Hudson Valley, it's not difficult for me to get there any time I choose. In fact, it's less than forty miles from where I now sit. It is where Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on the night of January 30, 1882, and where he and Eleanor sleep side-by-side in the rose garden of the mansion. I need the place like a tonic! Whenever I get to feeling depressed about this country (which, fortunately, is only when I'm sober) I take a little trek up there. Without fail, I always leave the joint feeling a little better about America. If you ever find yourself in my neck of the woods, I cannot recommend it enough.

Seventy years later he still speaks to us. We're not listening. That is our eternal shame. Let me leave you with his best remembered quote:

"So first of all, let me express my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is...."
`
Aw, hell. You know the rest of it.

FDR's policies are proof that government has a place to better the lives of its citizens and build a great country. Republicans are hurting the country by not being willing to invest tax money in the infrastructure, or the health and well being of the citizens. Republican fiscal policies have left future Americans in such deep debt, they won't be able to fix our mess even if they want to. It's simple math. Clinton raised taxes and presented a balanced budget (firt time in decades) but Bush ruined that also. Now Republicans cut food stamps, want to cut SSi and SS. I guess they missed the history class that explained why FDR's policies were necessary, and had been since 1880.

So the hallmark of a great country is how many of it's citizens are on food stamps?

At 10:15 AM, Blogger Tom Degan said...

The hallmark of a great country is its priorities. Providing enough decent-paying jobs is only one of them. Making sure that it's neediest citizens don't go hungry and homeless is another.

At 12:40 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes anon 9:39am, a great country does not let people starve, or die prematurely, especially when it is preventable.
Republicans give another tax break (my tax money) to an oil company and other corporations, but cut food stamps and medical assistance.
As Tom pointed out, my priority is to help citizens achieve a better standard of living (or keep them alive) not help rich corporations get richer on my tax money.
We can never stop government corruption, fraud, waste, etc.; and I would rather those excesses go to the people, not corporations. It's "we the people", not "we the corporations."
Corporations can fend for themselves, it's a little harder for a 75 year old with a crippling, life threatening disability.
Of course if your priority does not care about people's well being, then by all means vote Republican.

Republicans.

All they need to do is support raising the minimum wage.

Is that why NY state is offering to reduce taxes on corporations in order to attract business to relocate to NY State? Because Republicans want to raise taxes on those business?

If all they need to do is support raising the minimum wage why doesn't NY State do that instead of cutting taxes on business? Nothing stopping NY from raising the minimum wage within it's State?

Problem solved!

Gotta love Sore Loser WHINING about someone using his name. Oh, the irony.

But we can tell it's you by the stupidity of the questions, and your inability to admit that you have been wrong.

If there were a NATIONAL CORPORATE tax rate that states could not alter, then there would be no reason for businesses to move to the state where they can gouge prices and exploit the workforce.

BTW, New York's minimum wage IS more than the federal minimum, it's just not high enough.

One cannot live in Iowa at $8.00 per hour, and it costs A LOT MORE to live in New York.

Why must everything be explained to the Boy troll?
Hey, there's a name you can HAVE. At least it describes you.

BTW, since you know all and see all, you should know that I did not steal Dave's or James Hanson's name nor have I ever posted as "Al Sharptoon". But that would force you to address the very basic question that you are hiding from about NY State tax incentives and their Min wage.

I know it's a lot easier for you to attack me instead of addressing the issues I brought forth. But if doing so keeps you out of anger management classes, I'm happy to have been of service to you.

Mozart,
Have you ever asked your self why NY State feels the best way to attract new business and the jobs that go with them to their State is to lower taxes?
So how high should the Min wage be, $25 an hour, $50 and hour? What do you think the cost of the services being provided to you by these min wage workers would do? Go up or go down? Do you thing everybody wages should go up by the same percentage as the min wage increases, including active and retired military?

What would you do if you couldn't afford to live in NY? Do you think moving would be a good option? Getting the training needed for a better job? Or getting govt help to pay your bills?

Why do you think the under employed are just that?

NATIONAL CORPORATE tax rate, think we dont have one Mozart? Shows what you know.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- On Sunday, the United States gets a distinction no nation wants -- the world's highest corporate tax rate. Japan, which currently has the highest rate in the world -- a 39.8% rate on business income between national and local taxes -- cuts its rate to 36.8% as of April 1.Mar 27, 2012

According to 2014 data from the OECD, the combined federal and state statutory corporate tax rate for the United States is 39.1 percent. The average of the other 33 members of the OECD is 24.8 percent — 14.3 percentage points lower than the U.S. rate. Weighted by country GDP, the average for these 33 countries is 28.3 percent — 10.8 percentage points lower than the U.S. rate.

How many new domestic jobs would corporations create if the NATIONAL CORPORATE tax rate was raised to 50%?
That along with raising the min wage to $50.00 an hour would turn this nations right around and head it in the correct direction, right Mozart?

Why did JFK cut taxes in order to end a recession? Did it work? Or should he have raised taxes? What are you thoughts on this, O'Wizard of economics 101?

Next will come a series of attacks on everything about me but my blood type, (for the record it's B+), anything to avoid having to think and answer the problems I've just posed.

Sigh.

A key Senate committee voted unanimously Tuesday to give Congress the power to approve or reject any deal to limit Iran's nuclear program.

The 19-0 vote in the Foreign Relations Committee was a surprising show of unity on an issue that had bitterly divided lawmakers over whether Congress was interfering with the administration's ability to secure an international agreement on nuclear weapons.

The committee's Republican chairman, Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, and top Democrat, Sen. Ben Cardin of Maryland, appeared side-by-side after the vote to congratulate each other on a deal that united liberals and conservatives and prompted President Obama to drop a veto threat."

Are these 19 on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee traitors? No they aren't.

But the jackoffs on Tom's blog and the jackoff who calls himself President say they are.

Like I said, IF ALL THE TAX RATES IN THE COUNTRY WERE THE SAME, THERE WOULD BE NO REASON FOR BUSINESSES TO MOVE.

I remember Utah doing this. Give businesses HUGE (but temporary) tax incentives to move the headquarters there, and when the taxes went back up, they moved, leaving unemployment and empty buildings. If tax rates were all the same, they'd stay put and keep the workers.

Mozart,
Your solution is to raise taxes higher and higher, wonder why NY state doesn't agree with your economics? They do have a democrat Governor and a democrat controlled State house, maybe you should fly out there and set those democrats straight!

BTW, you want the federal government to control the tax rate put in placed by the States? That sounds like the real Constitutional thing to do, but hey, Constitution just gets in the way of what liberals want to do.

Here's an idea, why don't you start with Iowa raising their personal taxes, business taxes and min wage to the same level of Illinois? See how that would work. Or better still since high taxes and higher min wage are the way to property, why haven't you moved to IL?
Put your money where you mouth is.

So it's the job of govt to provide good paying jobs and when it fails to so it's job is to provide food stamps?

Many of the same states are requiring welfare recipients to submit to drug tests which violates the 4th amendment.

So tell me again how fair and consistent tax laws are unconstitutional?

The economy was at it's strongest when the tax rate on the richest people was 90%. The middle class was prosperous, and it only took ONE income to raise a family.

Now conservatives are tearing down the "New deal" and eliminating the middle class. The economy has "crashed" twice under conservative rule, and has been "repaired" under Liberal control.

Since the economy was strong at 90% tax level, then why didn't Obama make that the rate when he his party controlled Congress?
Solution for NY and IL would be to raise tax rates to 90%. Bet you wish the tax rate capped at 90% in Iowa.

So when are you moving to IL for all the benefits of higher taxes?

Put your money where you mouth is Mozart and move to where there are higher taxes.
Or stop whining about how you wished taxes were higher.

Some interesting tax facts (for those that are into that kind of thing)…

These are tax source %’s of GDP:

DECADE 1950-1959 averages (heyday of 90% upper marginal tax rates)
Individual income tax – 7.2
Corporate income tax – 4.6
Social insurance – 2.0
Total – 16.7 (includes other sources than the 3 above)

DECADE 2000-2009 averages
Individual income tax – 7.8
Corporate income tax – 1.8
Social insurance – 6.25
Total 17.1 (includes other sources than the 3 above)

Based on my research, post WWII total tax receipts as % of GDP fluctuated rather randomly and between about 16-19%.

The higher marginal rates post-war were paid by almost no one because the income ranges were so high to trigger those rates. Also, the % of tax burden borne by the lower income earners was greater in the 50’s generally than in recent years. There are more low income credits today than then. The ones “stuck” with the bill are the middle and upper-middle classes.

Appears to me that corporations were paying a higher % of income back then, although, their social insurance burdens were not as high then as now.

We are a consumer society, so I wonder why people like anon think we should all live by poverty wages? No wonder our economy is slow since most Americans don't have money to spend. Corporations are killing their own profits by paying such meager wages. They can invest their millions and make more profit than from the products they make. I guess they think they can survive with only a small share of sales. At what point will they lose money? 10% market share? Maybe 20, or 30% market share. Ford had it right, pay employees enough to buy, his market share quadrupled and so did his profits. Simple math.

Boy Troll, when you come up with an intelligent argument let us know.

Obama couldn't just wave a wand and do as he pleased, even with a "majority" in congress. The Dems didn't have the numbers to beat a FILLIBUSTER.

And taxes are high enough for my income level right here. They need to be higher on the rich NATIONWIDE. How do you think Clinton saved the economy? A simple 3% hike on the top incomes.

And you tell me why there are no good paying jobs. The "Job creators" got their tax breaks. Now, WHERE ARE THE JOBS?

Oh yeah, OVERSEAS, where there are no regulations, no min. wage, and no Social Security. Of course, that's what your teabagger buddies want for the USA. A ruling class and a service class, with no pesky "middle class" demanding a living wage or benefits.

Oh and I mentioned Climate change because your conservative heroes in several states are BANNING THE TERMS, which should outrage you since it's a violation of the first amendment, but I guess you only care about the 2nd. The rest of the CONSTITUTION is up for grabs right?

America Rising is a Political Action Committee (PAC) that produces opposition research on Democratic Party members. It is located in Alexandria, Virginia. It was founded in March 2013 by Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign manager, Matt Rhoades. Political strategist Tim Miller left the Republican National Committee (RNC) to join the clearinghouse. As of January 2014, between the PAC and the Limited Liability Corporation (LLC) run by fellow opposition research veteran Joe Pounder, the organization employed 47 people, full or part-time. CNN reported that America Rising would be split into two entities: a super PAC that aimed to spread negative stories about congressional Democratic incumbents and candidates through digital channels and earned media, and a LLC that would house a video library to be shared with GOP candidates, the RNC and other right-leaning groups. To avoid making illegal in-kind corporate contributions, the LLC would likely need to charge candidates for access to the library. Pounder and Miller estimated it would have a budget of between $10 and $15 million for the 2013-2014 election cycle.

Has Obamacare Turned Voters Against Sharing the Wealth?

"With the advent of the Affordable Care Act, the share of Americans convinced that health care is a right shrank from a majority to a minority.

This shift in public opinion is a major victory for the Republican Party. It is part of a larger trend: a steady decline in support for redistributive government policies. Emmanuel Saez, an economics professor at Berkeley and one of the nation’s premier experts on inequality, is a co-author of a study that confirms this trend, which has been developing over the last four decades.

The erosion of the belief in health care as a government-protected right is perhaps the most dramatic reflection of these trends. In 2006, by a margin of more than two to one, 69-28, those surveyed by Gallup said that the federal government should guarantee health care coverage for all citizens of the United States. By late 2014, however, Gallup found that this percentage had fallen 24 points to 45 percent, while the percentage of respondents who said health care is not a federal responsibility nearly doubled to 52 percent.

The public focus shifted:
Critics started raising concerns about the cost of these plans — higher taxes and premiums for those with coverage, more government interference in physician choices, and of course the potential of abortion coverage. People with coverage [83.7 percent of the population in 2010] became concerned about the implications for middle income people with these universal plans."

A: it's already been explained to you WHY the "nuclear option" wouldn't have worked in that situation in 2009.

B: FDR didn't WANT businesses to get tax breaks for not hiring people, he had a depression to resolve. FDR did it right. He spent money like a fiend, creating the CCC and other WORKERS programs, built most of the infrastructure the GOP now refuses to maintain, including Hoover Dam and the TVA, built a MIDDLE CLASS, which the GOP now is trying to destroy, and told the huge money grubbing corporations what to go do with themselves. This effectively ended the Depression and got the country back on the road to recovery.
For this Prescott Bush involved himself in a coup to have FDR removed from office, and the government turned over to the military.

New York's way will not work, as has already been proven by the FACT that the economy has NEVER improved when taxes are cut.

And your "sharpest pencil" comment proves you cannot come up with an original thought. It's also ironic considering how much more intelligent my comments are than yours.

BTW, have you come to the realization that the Senate is part of congress yet? Are you over your tantrum?

Bull shit!

B.Tax breaks for NOT hiring people????Just what are you smoking these days Mozart?
Is that what you think NY State is doing.

If higher taxes and higher govt spending is the way to prosperity, then why not tax every one 99% of their income and have the govt out spend it's income by 10% every year.
Then we would living in paradise, just like Cuba and Venezuela.

You are so stupid to think you can keep throwing around your shit about my congress statement and not be held accountable for you dumbness.
How many kids do you have?

Boy Troll,

You take common sense taxation to a ridiculous extreme and call that an argument.

Yes, New York will give businesses tax breaks and ask for no guarantees that they hire any AMERICANS. Under Eisenhower, the top tax rate was 90% or better but hardly anyone PAID that because there were tax breaks for expanding the business and hiring workers. Now they get the tax breaks for NOTHING. Then they ship the ACTUAL JOBS OVERSEAS, and hide most of their profits in offshore accounts.

People like you WNINE about "illegals" stealing American jobs, when the corporations are outsourcing the good jobs, leaving low paying "fast food" jobs. Then you WHINE when people have to depend on welfare.

You can call ME "stupid" all you want, but YOU were the one who didn't know the Senate was part of congress. Yeah, I'm going to keep bringing that up, especially given that in all this time (and several screen names) that is the FIRST TIME you have ever mentioned it, let alone admitted you were wrong.

When you are PROVEN WRONG you either change the subject, or as recently, go off on a childish diatribe full of third grade insults.

BTW, not that it's any of your business, but I have two fine, intelligent, successful children, as well as one adult stepson who is also intelligent and successful.

Maybe if you had had a Father like me you wouldn't be so immature and narcissistic.

In it's simplest form, the economy is just money moving around. When you have more than 95% of the nation's wealth stagnating in the hands of less that 2% of the people, it cannot be good for the economy. Henry Ford knew that at the turn of the century. He paid workers enough to be able to actually buy the cars they were building. That's just good business. Guess what? He got rich anyway. FDR knew that because it caused the Depression. And we see that now with a weak economy. The ONLY way to bring the economy back to full strength is to raise taxes on the richest people (and see that they actually PAY) and pay the workforce enough money that they can not only SURVIVE, but actually spend some money on products other American companies produce.

Instead of a boondoggle pipeline that would benefit NO ONE, how about we pass Obama's infrastructure bill? That would put as many as 100,000 people to work and REPAIR OUR CRUMBLING INFRASTRUCTURE!! WHY do your GOP heroes oppose that?

I can't wait for your third grade reply.

Conservatives like you just can't see the simple logic of that.

I told you Mozart, that I was an orphan, so what else you got issuing from that pin head of yours?

Oh, BTW, I really dont give a damn about your family other that they failed to raise a self reliant adult male, who now is breeding more of his own kind.

So the reason illegals come here to get the jobs, jobs that you say are being sent overseas by our evil corporations?
Somebody ought to tell them if they want those jobs to go overseas and get them there, cause according to mouth breathers like you, they aren't here. So why are they coming here? For all the free stuff liberal's promise them in return for their vote? Free stuff paid for by having the highest corp tax rate in the world, which is why corps send the jobs overseas in the first place.
Nothing new about that, the DNC has been doing that since FDR!

Hey, did you see Hillery has gotten another group of women to support her being elected? Called "Hookers for Hillary” Bill Clinton is it's official Sargent at arms

And you know what MOfart? I'm going to keep bringing up the fact that James Hansen said you were not the sharpest pencil in the box, to which you said "THANKS"!! Hard to argue with that logic.

BTW why is it again the the Dems COULDN'T use the NUKE Option but one time? Why are you bringing up a pipeline? Are you a TROLL?

At 11:38 PM, Blogger Mozart1220 said...

Wow. After all the times the "nuclear option" has been explained to you, you still don't get it.

Again you resort to third grade name calling and insults.

The KKK supports the tea Party. I guess by your logic, that means the tea party supports the KKK.

And I didn't say "illegals" were coming for the OUTSOURCED jobs.

Maybe you should learn to read and COMPREHEND what the adults are saying.

You have NEVER shown evidence that ANYTHING I have said is wrong. NEVER. Not once.

And go figure you don't want to debate the pipeline vs. a real infrastructure program. You'd lose.

Big.

Now come back with some more childish insults.

At 11:43 PM, Blogger Mozart1220 said...

Oh it might have been JH that used that term, but it's YOU that keeps repeating it, proving you have no original thoughts of your own.

Unless you care to admit YOU are "James Hansen"

So keep repeating it. It's not true anyway, so what do I care?

However, you DID say

"Ahh Mozart, Mitch McConnell is in the Senate, not the Congress""

Can't deny that, can you?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthurdale,_West_Virginia

"Arthurdale was the first of many New Deal planned communities established under Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration.[2] It was intended to take impoverished laborers, farmers, and coal miners and move them to a modern rural community that would allow them to become economically self-sufficient.

Construction began at the end of 1933, and from the outset it was clear that the Arthurdale community had become one of Eleanor Roosevelt's chief priorities. She intervened with Interior Secretary Harold Ickes and with others to ensure that the Arthurdale homes were built with modern necessities such as insulation and indoor plumbing. Eleanor personally chose the refrigerators that went into each home.

On October 12, 1933, the purchase of the Arthurdale land was announced publicly. The press release painted Arthurdale as a "demonstration project" that would help unemployed coal miners. Each family would receive a modest home and enough acreage to raise their own food and crops. Each home would cost about $2,000 and the community was to govern itself, much like small New England towns. There were to be no private employment options, aside from a factory that would provide equipment for the U.S. Post Office.[5]

While Eleanor Roosevelt saw Arthurdale as an exciting new chance for the government to provide destitute citizens with the foundation for successful, self-sufficient lives, the project soon faltered on budgetary and political grounds. The cost of constructing and maintaining the Arthurdale community far exceeded what the government had anticipated and the idea of federally planned communities had never sat well with conservatives. Conservatives condemned it as socialist and a "communist plot", while Democratic members of Congress opposed government competition with private enterprise.[6] Thomas Schall, a US Senator from Minnesota, accused Roosevelt of having her name autographed on furniture produced by the Arthurdale collective, which was then sold for five times the normal price.[7]"

Wow, this wonderful plan by Eleanor and approved by FDR and his authoritarian Central Planners was way over budget. So what if the money came from the tax payers. The "Brain Trust" knew what was better for everybody else. Gee golly, I wonder why the Great Depression lasted as long as it and Presidental term limits were put in place to end dictatorships.

Eleanor picked out the refrigerators because she knew that is what everybody wanted. Did she also pick out the out houses?

So the Boy troll changes the subject again. Go figure.

'Just the sore Loser" doesn't bring up the fact that the Depression lasted as long as it did because huge problems can't be solved overnight, and that today taxpayers fund subsidies for corporations that cost them hundreds of times more than the Arthurdale project did then.

He also fails to mention that the main reason the project failed was that it would take years for it to become self sufficient and that pesky WAR came along to drain away the funding.

At least it was an attempt to HELP POOR PEOPLE which was better than Glenn Beck's idea for a "Utopian" (read Cult) city.

He claims to support "freedom" yet wants to build a city for White people where he controls every aspect of their lives.

A BBC Radio 4 investigation sheds new light on a major subject that has received little historical attention, the conspiracy on behalf of a group of influential powerbrokers, led by Prescott Bush, to overthrow FDR and implement a fascist dictatorship in the U.S. based around the ideology of Mussolini and Hitler.

In 1933, Marine Corps Maj.-Gen. Smedley Butler was approached by a wealthy and secretive group of industrialists and bankers, including Prescott Bush the current President's grandfather, who asked him to command a 500,000 strong rogue army of veterans that would help stage a coup to topple then President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

According to the BBC, the plotters intended to impose a fascist takeover and "Adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini to beat the great depression."

LePage alleged that King and his family had left Maine for Florida to avoid paying state taxes.

King responded, “We see our taxes as a way of paying back the state that has given us so much. State taxes pay for state services. There’s just no way around it. Governor LePage needs to remember there ain’t no free lunch.”

He hammered LePage for making the baseless accusations and said that he is still waiting for an apology from the governor.

“He still owes me an apology, but I don’t expect to collect on that IOU,” King said in a statement. “I repeat: he’s not man enough to admit he made a mistake (best case scenario) or knowingly misrepresented the facts (worst case). Now let’s let this rest.”

The Death of the Left

The left is winning, but for the left winning is indistinguishable from dying. The West didn’t defeat Communism; it held it at bay long enough for it to defeat itself. The Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China crushed Communism more decisively than Goldwater could have ever dreamed of.

The embargo didn’t turn Cuba into a hellhole whose main tourism industry is inviting progressive Canadian pedophiles to rape its children. Castro did that with help from the dead guy on the red t-shirts.

“One of the greatest benefits of the revolution is that even our prostitutes are college graduates,” Castro told Oliver Stone. In real life, his prostitutes are lucky if they graduated from elementary school.

American admirers eager to get to Havana claim to be worried that Starbucks will ruin their Socialist paradise. What really worries them is that American businesses might give Cuban teens an economic alternative to sexually servicing decrepit leftists from Berkeley for $10 a night in the revolutionary version of Thailand where everyone is free, except the political prisoners and raped children.

There’s no embargo to blame in Venezuela. Hugo Chavez destroyed his own Bolivarian revolution by implementing it. The Venezuelan economic collapse really took off while Obama was in the White House leafing through the tract Chavez had gifted him blaming America for all of Latin America’s troubles.

Now Chavez, the tract’s author and the Venezuelan economy are all dead.

Chavez’s successor has desperately tried to blame America for his crisis, but Uncle Sam had nothing to do with the lack of toilet paper in the stores, the milk rationing and the soldiers stationed outside electronics retailers. It’s just what happens when the left wins.

When the man in the White House wanted a Latin American revolution to succeed, it still failed.

The left is at its best when it’s trying to take power. It unleashes its egocentric creative impulses, it writes poems, plays and songs as its heroes die in doomed battles or pump their fists at protests. And then they win, get rich and fat, the people grow poor and the country becomes a miserable dictatorship. Try putting a 300 pound Che on a t-shirt. Or get inspired by Obama lazily playing golf.

A successful leftist revolution quickly becomes indistinguishable from an ordinary oligarchy. Millions may die, but decades later all that’s left is a vast pointless bureaucracy that runs on family connections, an ideology no one understands anymore and an impoverished population ripe for outside exploitation.

And then before you know it, Moscow is full of fast food joints, China uses slave labor to make iPhones and aging hippies can buy children in Cuba for the price of a Happy Meal.

The left rams through its ideology by force and when the ideology is gone, all that’s left is the force.

The left is like a suicide bomber or a honey bee. It can’t win. It can only kill and die. A successful leftist regime is a contradiction in terms. The hard revolutions blow up fast and then decay into prolonged misery. The soft electoral revolutions skip the explosions and cut right to the prolonged misery.

Europe went Full Socialist and gave up. Carter’s malaise has been a reality in Europe for generations. What was four years in America was forty years in Europe. The American left’s great ambitions; bureaucratic rule, international impotence, national health care, endless education, environmental correctness and childbirth replaced by immigration were realized in Europe. And they killed Europe.

Now they’re killing America.

The left has won and victory is killing it. It’s a slow miserable death for it, and for us. If the right wins, then a defeated and revitalized left will go back to fulminating and ranting, plotting and scheming its way to a victory that will kill it. If its victory becomes permanent, a generation from now Cuban sex tourists with pesos will be visiting the Socialist enclaves of Berkeley or Boston for their child prostitution needs.

Re: the phony Carville quote:

In October 2012 the above-referenced quotation in which James Carville purportedly likened the Democratic constituency to "a herd of cows" received wide circulation on the Internet. It appears to have originated with an unsourced posting to the ThinkExist.com which has been reproduced on a number of other web sites. However, we found no news article, speech, interview transcript, or printed source documenting this statement as one actually made by James Carville, and a representative from his office confirmed that the purported quote was not something Carville himself ever said:

Apparently the quote was falsely posted by an unknown user to a quotations website called thinkexist.com. We have contacted the website and asked them to take the quote down. James Carville never said these words, and this quote in no way belongs to James Carville.

Feel free to distribute my response, so people know the truth that this quote was 100% falsely attributed to James Carville.

Conservatives love Socialism when it comes to police and fire departments and the military. I have yet to meet one who turns down Social Security when they retire. Most send their kids to public schools, and at least in the past when they actually read things other than the old testament they used public libraries. Many commute to work using public transportation.

"Socialism" is a good thing in some cases, but the right likes to use it as a scary word to freak out a base that for the most part has no idea what it means.

Following the election of the town’s first African-American mayor, five of the six officers on a small Missouri town police force resigned en masse, reports KFVS.

Former city clerk Tyrus Byrd was sworn in as mayor of Parma, Missouri on Tuesday only to find out that police officers, as well as the city attorney and a water treatment supervisor, had resigned before she took office.

According to outgoing Mayor Randall Ramsey, who is stepping down after 37 years in town hall over two terms, the city employees gave no prior notice.

Residents of the town, some pointing out that the town was probably over-staffed with police, were unconcerned about their safety after the two full-time and three part-time officers quit.

“I think it was pretty dirty the way they all quit without giving her a chance,” resident Martha Miller said. “But I don’t think they hurt the town by quitting, because who needs six police for 740 people?”

Once again we find out that Obama has been lying, and this time it’s about Iran. More specifically, it’s about Iran’s break-out time to a nuclear weapon. According to the Energy Secretary (via Bloomberg View), the U.S. has believed for years that Iran’s breakout time for a nuke was only roughly three months:

Speaking to reporters and editors at our Washington bureau on Monday, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz acknowledged that the U.S. has assessed for several years that Iran has been two to three months away from producing enough fissile material for a nuclear weapon. When asked how long the administration has held this assessment, Moniz said: “Oh quite some time.” He added: “They are now, they are right now spinning, I mean enriching with 9,400 centrifuges out of their roughly 19,000. Plus all the . . . . R&D work. If you put that together it’s very, very little time to go forward. That’s the 2-3 months.”

But that was considered classified, until recently:

Brian Hale, a spokesman for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, confirmed to me Monday that the two-to-three-month estimate for fissile material was declassified on April 1.

Because it’s been classified, Obama’s been able to run around saying the breakout time was whatever he wanted it to be, and he did just that:

Back in 2013, when Congress was weighing new sanctions on Iran and Obama was pushing for more diplomacy, his interest was in tamping down that sense of urgency. On the eve of a visit to Israel, Obama told Israel’s Channel Two, “Right now, we think it would take over a year or so for Iran to actually develop a nuclear weapon, but obviously we don’t want to cut it too close.”

On Oct. 5 of that year, Obama contrasted the U.S. view of an Iranian breakout with that of Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who at the time said Iran was only six months away from nuclear capability. Obama told the Associated Press, “Our assessment continues to be a year or more away. And in fact, actually, our estimate is probably more conservative than the estimates of Israeli intelligence services.”

So why did Obama declassify it? Because his agenda changed. Now he needs to argue the urgency of his deal with Iran, and what’s more urgent than a two to three month breakout time?

Today Obama emphasizes that Iran is only two to three months away from acquiring enough fuel for a bomb, creating a sense of urgency for his Iran agreement.

So even when our liar-in-chief is telling the truth, it’s only for his twisted purpose of allowing Iran to get nukes.

Just despicable.

The First Embarrassing Error In The Anti-Clinton Book Has Already Been Found

According to Thinkprogress, the author of Clinton Cash uses a press release to bolster one of the many speculative claims. That same press release was revealed as a hoax back in 2013.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said on Monday she would consider changes to the U.S. tax code to reward companies that produce goods and services as opposed to trading, which she likened to “playing games.”

Campaigning in the early-voting state of New Hampshire, Clinton underscored the anti-Wall Street rhetoric she used in the launch of her 2016 White House bid last week.

“I think what we have to do is look at the whole tax system and try to figure out what is an economic investment as opposed to one without economic purpose,” Clinton said in response to a question during a visit to Whitney Brothers Inc., a family-owned business in Keene, New Hampshire. “Because there are a lot of those, where people are just basically playing games.”

“I want to do everything I can to support goods and real services and take a good look at what is now being done in the trading world,” she said.

Clinton, who has emphasized populist economic themes in an effort to court the progressive wing of her party, repeated her criticism, first made last week in Iowa, of provisions in the tax code that allow some of Wall Street’s richest financiers to pay lower tax rates than middle-class Americans such as nurses and truck drivers.

Some hedge fund managers and private equity firm partners benefit from a loophole that lets them pay the capital gains tax rate, which is lower than the ordinary tax rate, on large portions of their incomes.

Clinton, the Democratic frontrunner, has yet to spell out a detailed economic plan but in campaign stops over the last week she outlined goals, such as making college education more affordable and tackling income inequality.

On the five-year anniversary of the worst oil spill in U.S. history, television reporters detailed the devastating environmental and economic impacts still facing the Gulf Coast region today, and directly rebutted BP's misleading spin. But they should not lose sight of another equally-important part of the story: how increasingly risky and expansive offshore drilling practices, along with insufficient oversight, could lead to another major spill.

BP is trying very hard to convince the world that the Gulf of Mexico has recovered from the oil well explosion that killed 11 workers and devastated the region's ecosystem and economy -- but television reporters spent the five-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon disaster picking apart BP's claims. MSNBC's Chris Hayes asserted: "As much as BP wants you to think it's all better, it's really not." NBC's Kerry Sanders called out BP's misleading advertisements on Today, rebutting BP's claim that "seafood catches are back to pre-spill levels" by reporting that Louisiana oyster harvest levels have actually decreased by nearly 25 percent. Fox News' Shepard Smith lambasted BP's public relations campaign -- recalling his past criticism of BP, which stood in stark contrast to the rest of the network's BP-friendly coverage in the aftermath of the spill. Smith teased a segment on his show by asking rhetorically: "Five years later you see the BP commercials, everything is great. Right?" He then answered his own question, detailing the tourism and wildlife damages that still exist, and concluding: "Five years later, this ain't over."
