The infamous last words of Eric Garner
One night many years ago, in the autumn of 1975, I was a passenger in a '68 Chevrolet Impala that was being driven by a friend of mine named Al Maldonado (What ever became of you, Al?) Although not an African American, his dark skin and pronounced, seventies-style Afro made it quite possible for him to be mistaken for a black guy, particularly at night. Out of nowhere there were flashing red lights in the rear-view mirror and we were pulled over. Poor old Al went into a severe panic.
"It's just a routine stop", I assured him, "It's nothing to freak out about, Al!"
As it turns out, he had every reason to panic. He was not only handcuffed, he was bombarded with verbal abuse sprinkled with obscenities just for good measure. One of the cops kept referring to him as "Joe Shit". Being an upper middle class white kid I was fairly naive about the wicked ways of the real world almost forty years ago. I learned a dandy little lesson that night.
By the way, Al's only "crime" was that he did not have any identification on him at the time. Isn't that lovely?

I was a bit hesitant to comment on the Michael Brown/Ferguson case. There were too many shades of grey to make me comfortable doing so. My major problem with the officer in question was why the hell he thought it essential to empty his gun into the kid. One shot, two at the most, would have sent him a very stern message. He should have been charged with manslaughter - at the very least. But since no video of the altercation exists - that we yet know of - I'm unable to get very worked up about it. That's not the case with respect to the death of the Eric Garner of Staten Island, New York. His killing was captured on a cellphone video, and there should be not a shred of doubt in the mind of anyone who has seen it:
Eric Garner was murdered in cold blood. We are all eye-witnesses to that murder.
Mr. Garner, 43, was cornered by police on July 17, 2014 not far from his home. According to them, he was suspected of having sold "loosies" on the street - although on the video he is not seen committing this capital offense.
And just what is a "loosie" you may well ask? Since the price of cigarettes have gone through the roof in recent years due to heavy taxation (a tax I support by the way) Some entrepreneurs have found a way to make a small profit by selling ciggies on the street, one at a time, usually for a buck a piece. For a person with a severe nicotine habit who can't afford a ten-dollar pack, it's a convenient way to grab a quick smoke. It's also quite inexpensive - assuming that the person purchasing them limits him or herself to four or five per day. I would imagine it's also a convenient way to ween oneself off of the habit if one is attempting to quit. No harm done, right? Think again.

Bullshit. the entire incident is captured in dying color on video and the crime committed by this nitwit is undeniable. When it is clear that Garner has been subdued, lying helpless on the sidewalk, Pantaleo stays on top of him, his elbow wrapped lethally around his neck. He stays in this position in spite of Eric's begging for air. It's as sociopathic as anything I think I've ever seen. That's what makes this guy's flight from justice all-the-more outrageous and disturbing. And please bear in mind that this tragedy occurred in a suburb of New York City - not in some shit-for-brains state like Missouri.

We haven't heard the end of this. I'm sure that his survivors are going to bring this to civil court - as damned well they should. Data gleaned from these supplemental data are provided in this section.
This section also includes information about justifiable homicide—certain willful killings that must be reported as justifiable or excusable. In the UCR Program, justifiable homicide is defined as and limited to:
The killing of a felon by a peace officer in the line of duty.
The killing of a felon, during the commission of a felony, by a private citizen.
Because these killings are determined through law enforcement investigation to be justifiable, they are tabulated separately from murder and nonnegligent manslaughter. Dear Sore: The fact of the matter is that when money was being spent on the war on poverty, poverty declined. When Reagan took office, there began a long erosion of the safety net. Guess what? We began to lose ground on the war on poverty. Please don't justify the heartless right wing attack on the poor by claiming that the monies spent on poverty amelioration was poorly spent. Just look at one sector, social security, will blow your argument out of the water. Poverty has all but been banished by the implementation of SSI. I'm sure that you, or your parents can attest to that fact.
Moreover, if we raised the minimum wage, several millions of hard working people will immediately be pulled above the poverty level, and off the welfare rolls. And spare us the doom of business argument. Those states that have raised the minimum wage have lower unemployment rates than the national average.

I was kind of surprise you didn't take a whack at the Michael Brown shooting. In this blog, you stated there were a lot of gray areas.

We've seen police killers intent of revolution taken alive. Michael Brown had a clip emptied at him. I'm not seeing a gray area.
In regards to Garner, it is morbidly fascinating to watch so many dismiss needless death. I've heard over and over again the talking point, "Don't break the law..." "Do as you're told."
Well...ok.
But isn't it oh-so-odd, that many of the people who state this, had a very different commentary for say...Clive Bundy.
Clive Bundy is also a white collar criminal. He refuses to pay his taxes and his conflict with the government goes back at least a decade. Bundy's guilt is known--it's been decided in a court of law. Garner was being arrested income tax violations. He hadn't been found guilty.
Bundy didn't do as he was instructed. He resisted. I say having a small army of people pointing guns at the Feds is "resistance."
Bundy is seen by many to be a "patriot"--a business man harassed and bled by the government. Garner is seen to be a "criminal"--a business man harassed and bled by the government.
What is the difference between these two? Well Bundy owes a hell of lot more than Garner. Bundy's resistance was more substantial than Garners.
Now one can read all the FBI crime stats they want--and just as an aside, isn't it interesting how the "average Joe" peruses these interesting journals? It makes you wonder if they enjoy bizarre lore or are looking for cover fire for their own latent racism.
Those FBI stats don't lie, but I would dare say that a stat based on the previous year's data is FAR LESS unnerving to police than men with high powered rifles, hiding behind their children, and taking aim at Federal authorities.
We can bury our heads in the sand about racism and police brutality and conveniently ignore what is going on this country. Maybe some missed that reading their FBI stats. However, when you look at Bundy and Garner, no matter how you slice it--there's a marked difference in fairness and equity that is happening in this country.
One cannot champion Bundy and condemn Garner.

Now about the FBI crime report from AG Eric Holder, (a black man), instead of dismissing the facts presented, an adult would discuss ways to end the high black crime rate. Instead of blaming cops for enforcing the law and the results of resiting the enforcement of the law.
That's what an adult would do.
Not a lot to say on the arrest and following incident. I don't think the police were racist and I don't think he intended to cause permanent harm to Garner. And, of course, Garner was not a choir boy - he didn't take past warnings to quit what he was doing and kept doing it. He decided to make his stand and as the song says "I fought the law and the law won..." If I'm overweight, asthmatic, and with a heart condition, I'm probably not going to fight with several trained policemen. Heck, I'm healthy and I'm not going to fight with policemen.
My question is - why are we criminalizing hocking cigarettes on the street? Who cares? And, unless they are stolen, the state does collect taxes on the sale of the pack. Tom, I'm shocked you are for the prohibition-esque taxes! Am I actually more liberal than you on this? If folks wanna smoke, let them smoke. For some, it helps keep them off of hard drug habits. Some enjoy it.
Also, why do some of the cops look like they are headed to a Pantera concert? If I saw Garner selling loosies on the sidewalk, I'd probably smile and say "how's it going" and keep moving. If I saw the extremely tatted up cargo-pants cop, I might be tad bit uncomfortable. Forgive my stereotyping, but full body paint makes me distrust you... it portends of a sociopathic tendency in my estimation.

A 17-year-old boy has been charged in the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Demario Bailey Saturday afternoon in Englewood.
Bailey’s family and friends are grief-stricken over the incident.
“This has to stop, this has to stop, in the name of Jesus this has to stop,” said Glenda Franklin in a prayer Sunday afternoon.
Franklin was moved to tears while praying for peace on the heels of the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Bailey. Bailey was walking with his twin brother to basketball practice at Johnson College Prep when they were ambushed by a group demanding the teen turnover his coat.
Seconds later the fatal shot was fired near an Englewood street corner on the 0-100 block of West 63rd Street.
Bailey was struck in the chest and died moments later.
His twin brother witnessed it all.
“He is traumatized, traumatized. Can you imagine you’re walking with your brother one minute and the next minute your brother is laying on the ground,” said Bailey’s cousin Faliata Holman.
It all happened Saturday afternoon in broad daylight.
By Sunday night, the block where Bailey lost his life was filled with mothers all too familiar with the pain of losing a child to violence and Bailey’s heartbroken family.
“It doesn’t make sense for these kids to be dying like this. My cousin was on his way to play basketball. He wasn’t a drug dealer, he wasn’t a gang banger, he was an upstanding kid,” said Holman.
Bailey would have turned 16-years-old on Tuesday.
Now, instead of celebrating life, Bailey’s family is mourning his abrupt death and demanding peace.
“We’ve got to start taking back our streets. This is ridiculous,” said Holman.

Eric Garner did not die at the scene of the confrontation. He suffered cardiac arrest in the ambulance taking him to the hospital and was pronounced dead about an hour later.
He was not choked to death.

The medical examiner says compression of the neck and chest, along with Garner's positioning on the ground while being restrained by police caused his death. Garner's acute and chronic bronchial asthma, obesity and hypertensive cardiovascular disease were contributing factors.
"Compression of the neck" means he was choked.

White Police Officer shot by black criminal in West Baltimore
At a news conference late Sunday outside the hospital where White POLICE OFFICER Groman underwent emergency surgery, POLICE CHIEF Batts, who is black, made an unprompted comment about the demonstrations.
"We've had marches nationwide over the fact that we have lost lives in police custody," Batts said. "I wonder if we'll have those same marches as officers are shot, too."
The comment drew praise from Ryan and other union leaders, but criticism from others.
The Rev. Cortly "C.D." Witherspoon, a protest organizer, condemned the shooting and said he wished Groman a speedy recovery.
"We have the same care and concern for him that we have for victims of police terror," Witherspoon said. "We are united in our opposition to violence, whether it's police-involved shootings or police terror."
BUT Witherspoon also said he had never seen Batts or other city officials stand with demonstrators when unarmed black men have been killed by police in Baltimore.
The group Baltimore Bloc, which has held more than 70 protests against police misconduct since late 2012, called Batts's comment "rhetorical and disingenuous" and demanded an apology.
"Baltimore Bloc condemns the insensitive and deliberately provocative comments made by Anthony Batts last night," the group said on its Facebook page. "Police officers are sworn to protect and serve the community. They are aware this is a dangerous job, as is the community who pays them for this service, arms them with several weapons at a time, and provides them with bulletproof vests and other protective gear that in some cases we are not legally permitted to own ourselves.
"This is quite different from the circumstances surrounding the in-custody murders of unarmed civilians by those same extremely armed and protected agents of the state."
The Police Department said early Monday afternoon that Batts would "provide a briefing on the investigative developments into the shooting of Police Officer Andrew Groman." But the commissioner did not appear at the news conference at police headquarters.
Rodriguez, who led the news conference in Batts' place, told reporters "we've said it before: All life matters."
"Any time an individual in this community or any community acts so heinously with such little regard for human life, it's very frustrating."

What prosperity? Detroit’s downward spiral has been legendary. Once the fourth largest city in the nation, and home to its largest industry, Detroit’s population has been cut in half, from 1.5 million in 1970, to less than 700,000 in 2012. Median household income is $27,862 compared to the state median of $48,669. The poverty level is 36.2 percent compared to a statewide level of 15.7. The murder rate is 11 times that of New York City, and the unemployment rate is above 18 percent, more than double the national average. Detroit Public Schools (DPS) have been under emergency management since 2008. In late February, the state review board revealed that the city faces a short-term cash $327 million budget deficit and an estimated $14 billion in long-term debt, primarily driven by unfunded pension and retirement health care obligations.
As a result, the city can’t provide basic services.

Modern laissez-faire capitalist proponents seem to me to have almost a Darwinian approach and go too far, stretching credulity. I truly think more (and better) regulation (in the banking industry for example) would have headed off some of the pain this world will some day endure - within the next 5 years most likely. Crooked banking, offshoring of middle-class manufacturing jobs, corporations owning politicians, and other factors could have been better managed for our country's well-being. Reasonable and right-minded regulation would have been better for us in hindsight.

I don't see how you can say that about Obama. I would agree with you if you would replace Obama with Elizabeth Warren. She is the only one who spoke up about the dangerous riders added to the budget bill - essentially allowing banks to gamble with depositors' money and backing us up to pre-2008 rules (or non rules). I applaud her for it. And, if it came down to Warren vs. Bush3 for Pres, I'd have to vote Warren, even though I don't see eye to eye on many social issues with her. Anyway, Obama has been largely complicit and is clearly serving the interest of financiers. I get that you are a devoted liberal, but I think you may have rose colored glasses on when it comes to Obama. Just like there aren't very many true conservatives, there aren't very many true democratic liberals either.
