Won't You Come Home, Jim Crow?

Oh, they wish we were in Dixie!
Oy vey! Oy vey!

Are you an African American? Are you poor? Are you elderly? Do you reside in the city? Are you a young person living in a college town? Are you planning on voting in 2012? You had better start making other plans for Election Day.

The Republican party
is at this very moment mounting a campaign that, if successful, will disenfranchise the the voting rights of African Americans - and everyone else who tends to vote left-of-center - all across America. Isn't that sweet? They understand all-too-well that the mysterious and unknowable segment of the population that the sociologists describe as "moderate" or "swing voters" (I call them "purple agitators" myself) are starting to become disgusted by the extremists who hijacked the Grand Old Party decades ago. What to do? Not to worry! Just bypass that nasty ol' Voting Rights Act of 1965. That'll learn 'em!

The tactics they so lovingly introduced in Florida in 2000 and then again in Ohio in 2004 are about to go nationwide. Think of it as some weird and twisted musical comedy that was edited and polished in a handful of, out-of-the-way off-Broadway theaters before the grand opening on the Great WHITE Way. How could this possibly happen? How could it be that the "party of Abraham Lincoln" is stooping so low as to steal from millions of people so fundamental a right? What has happened to the GOP? Historically speaking, something just ain't right! A little history lesson is in order here:

First of all, the obvious: They are no longer the party of the great emancipator. They haven't been that since at least 1964. Do you find it as odd as I do that the two greatest Re
publican presidents in history - Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt - are no longer even mentioned in their campaign literature and propaganda? You would think that the grand old party never even existed prior to 1980 when they nominated uber dingbat Ronald Reagan as their standard bearer! What the hell's up with that???

"A man without a vote is man without protection."

Lyndon Baines Johnson

LBJ never lived to be enlightened with regard to the Women's movement, but I am certain he had them in mind as well.

As their talking point never fails to remind us (and what cannot be denied) it was the Democrats who stood in staunch opposition to Civil Rights in America prior to the nineteen-seventies. For a century after the end of the Civil War, the boll weevil southern Democrats could never bring themselves to register with the party of "that nigger-lovin' bastard what freed the slaves". Ironically, back in the days of yore the overwhelming majority of registered Republicans south of the Mason Dixon line were black! As Jack Parr would have said, "I kid you not."

Everything changed in the mid-sixties.

After Lyndon Baines Johnson signed into law the Civil and Voting Rights Acts of 1964 and 1965 respectively, he told his two aides Bill Moyers and the late Jack Valenti, "We [meaning the Democrats] have lost the south for a generation." A generation??? He was kidding himself. He might as well have said, "We've lost the south forever."

Within a decade of the passage of these two monumental laws, a tidal wave of southern Dixiecrats fled - like psychotic rats - to the Republican party. And that is where their ideological heirs reside to this day. Just before he left the senate to become a highly paid lobbyist in 2006, Trent Lott told an interviewer that the mass exodus had nothing to do with race; that it was all about economics. Bullshit. It had EVERYTHING to do with race and nothing else. Who the hell is he kidding?

Fast forward
to 2011. It's not like it was in the bad old days. Racism in the State House has to be a tad more covert than it was back then. Their solution was brilliant - in a perfectly evil kind of way that is. They decided that they needed to confront - head on, I tell you - the "plague" of voter fraud. The fact there is no wide-spread epidemic of electoral fraud in this country (on part of the Democrats that is) was irrelevant to these assholes.

What is their evidence for the widespread fraud? An edited video of some nitwit dressed as a pimp, walking into one ACORN office somewhere and getting a woman behind a desk to say that fraudulent voting has occurred at that particular location . Case closed? Please.

Previously, the signature a person who showed up at the polls would be matched against his or her voter registration. They would then be allowed to cast their precious ballot. If the Republicans have their way, from now on the people will be required to show identification. And if they lack a proper driver's license, they will be forced to pur
chase voter IDs.

Do you see a pattern here? You're blind if you do not. First of all, it puts at a decided disadvantage - not only blacks - but city-dwellers who rely on public transportation and don't drive - the very people who tend to vote for the Democratic party. In order to obtain a proper, government-issued voter ID, they would be obliged to dig up their birth certificates. They would also be required to pay a fee for the ID itself, another disadvantage for poor people - traditional and reliable Democratic voters.

They're trying to pass laws that will make it more difficult to cast an absentee ballot. This would put the elderly at a disadvantage for the simple fact that voting at polling places, particularly in big cities, often involves standing in line for an hour or more. T
he elderly tend to vote for the Democrats. You're not surprised by this. I didn't think you would be.

I wonder how the College Republicans feel about this one:

In addition to all of the above they are looking into a nifty little scheme that will make it impossible for college students to register to vote in the towns where they attend school. College students also tend to vote Democratic. I'm sure that that's just a coincidence though.

What the Republicans have planned for 2012 is a subtle coup d'etat. "Subtle", that is, if you're not paying attention. If you rely on Rupert Murdoch's propaganda empire for your news and information you will be forgiven for not having noticed that any of this is happening in this once-great nation. But it is happening. Don't take my word for it; look it up for yourself. These hideous bastards and bitches have a plan for this republic and it doesn't turn out well for the rest of us. Wake up - if you haven't already.

Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election (2002)
A film by Robert Greenwald

If you do
not know the name Robert Greenwald, you really should. This gifted and superb filmmaker is responsible for some of the finest, hard-hitting documentaries ever made. The film mentioned above is no exception. The title speaks for itself. It is about how the Bush Mob was able to steal the election of 2000, the aftermath of which we're all still paying a heavy price over a decade later; a price the American people will be paying for generations. Mr. Greenwald's company is called, most appropriately, "Brave New Films". Here is a link to his website:

http://www.bravenewfilms.org/

Assuming you no longer have an independently owned video store in your neighborhood (Who does?) all of his films are available from Amazon.com. All are highly recommended.

Get the duct tape my head is gonna explode on this one.
Imagine the evil of requiring a photo ID to vote while at the same time, we are getting a full cavity search (after showing a photo ID) to board an airplane.
Is it asking too much after the last Presidential election and ACORN's federal funded voter fraud to require a simple photo proving that you are who you say you are to vote?
And the crap about the poor not being able to afford the photo id, please! Nice try Dave, last week it was FOX, this week it's voter ID's. Is this the best you can come up with in your search for a traction producing subject?

Gosh, Tom Seems like ole "just the facts" hasn't gotten the facts that Acorn's only "crime" was registering poor people, and they were the victims of a republican smear campaign completer with edited and fabricated vids. Now why the dems are such scared witless PC numptys afraid of offending even the offensive is beyond me.Some wing nut comes with a highly edited vid, and they accept it? Personally I feel that both partys need to change their names to reflect what they really are. the Dems are the American Spineless Party, and the Pubs are the American Fascist Party. OMG!! WE are soooo screwed!! And in the background contrilling both are the evil aristos who really run things
Too bad more people don't grasp that, BOTH partys are out to screw "we the people" Can we stop letting things being run by sociopaths? I am understanding how a normal person in 1930's Germany must have felt. "If I don't get out soon, I will die here" Scary

I have a solution. Anyone who takes any form of government hand out or is a union member must get a voter identification card. Given the insatiable appetite for government handouts and the propensity of the democrats to seek out all such public charity, you can be certain that every democrat will be accounted for. The Republicans will be at a significant disadvantage.

A lot of these voting laws go way beyond just requiring photo IDs. Florida is just one example.

1)Forces Provisional Ballots: The bill eliminates a long-standing provision that allows people to change their address or name at the polls. For four decades, Florida allowed those with proper photo ID whose name or address had changed due to marriage, or divorce, or a move by a military family to update that information on Election Day. . . . As one Florida supervisor of elections told the Florida Independent, the provision is “disturbing” as provisional ballots are often reserved for close races and thus “go uncounted.”

2)Cuts Early Voting: HB 1355 also cuts the time for early voting from 14 days to eight. The early voting reform was among former Gov. Charlie Crist’s (R-FL) election reforms to “prevent embarrassments like the 2000 election.” As the Miami Herald’s Joy-Ann Reid notes, “It was a hard-won victory for working people who sometimes can’t get to the polls if they work odd hours, or run out of time to resolve a problem at the polls.” According to Reid, in 2008, black churches and college students “took full advantage of the extra time” — two groups that overwhelmingly voted for President Obama.

3)Invalidates Absentee Ballots: The bill severely undercuts the absentee ballot. Under this bill, absentee ballots are determined illegal if the voter’s signature on the certificate does not match the signature on record.” As the Herald-Tribune notes, this will affect “voters who suffer from arthritis, strokes and other ailments that affect their handwriting. Those who fail to update their signatures in time would be out of luck.” The bill states that, if elections results are contested, a court cannot “consider any evidence other than the signatures on the voter’s certificate and the signature of the elector in the registration records” in determining the ballots validity.

4)Fines Third Party Voting Groups: Third-party voter registration groups, such as the non-partisan League of Women voters, the NAACP, and the Boy Scouts are also targeted by HB 1355 by requiring these groups to turn in registration cards within 48 hours of signature or face fines. Voter groups note that “the requirement would be difficult to meet if they are registering thousands of voters at a time.” Because of the “undue burden” this provision places on “thousands of volunteers,” the League of Women Voters — an organization with a “91-year history of registering and educating voters” — announced today that it will “cease [its] voter registration efforts in this state” should HB 1355 become law.

In Wisconsin, an already financially strapped state, the cost to implement this program will be over $2.7 million - all for a proven bogus claim that this is necessary because of voter fraud. In fact, there has been very little voter fraud and most of those have been due to human error. Illegals aren't guilty of it because they don't want to risk being deported. Ironically, it is the Republicans themselves who commit the most egregious acts of voter fraud. Surprise, surprise.

While factless "Just the Facts!" spouts his usual right-wing nonsense about ACORN and just about everything else he spews forth, the group everyone should be paying attention to is the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). This conservative, well funded and very dangerous organization is behind this legislation, which is why all these bills are worded just alike for the most part. To learn more about them go to:

ALECexposed.org

What they do should scare hell out of anyone who cares about this country and its future.

It's not just the poor who are being prevented from exercising their voting rights. It is the aged, the disabled, minorities, students, even the military and rural residents.

If Tom doesn't mind, you can see see a review of these bills on a state by state basis and other fact-checked (referenced) information concerning this matter - as opposed to baseless and unproven theories.

http://parsleyspics.blogspot.com/2011/05/march-toward-fascism-3.html

In these states that have passed these laws, we need to get organized and help those who are impacted by the laws get whatever papers are necessary and get them to the polls. This is the only way we can vote the bastards out.

Tom, how do you know fraudulent voting isn’t a big issue? I mean, the Democrats love to bring up how Bush allegedly stole the 2000 election – seemingly a huge process issue. Yet, you don’t have any suspicion whether other voting practices might need to be reconsidered? How do you know that Republicans aren’t taking advantage of lax ID requirements?

At 5:35 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ellis, I said "process issue" with the 2000 election. Process issue led to the courts getting involved - which I agree they never should have been. Some of the problems cited in that election (and others) was due to rolls being purged of felons or ex-convicts, where people with similar names were cast out as well. Seems to me a cool photo ID could have done away with some of the questionable shennanigans.

Again, how do you or Tom know that voter fraud is not a big problem?

I am surprised this got by eagle eyed Ellis, as it's great news for working Americans!

Madison, Wisc…] Earlier this month, analysts were dismayed by the nation’s anemic job creation numbers. On Thursday, state officials were pleased as they released data (http://dwd.wisconsin.gov/dwd/newsreleases/2011/unemployment/110721_june_state.pdf) that showed more than half of the net new jobs added in the US in June came from Wisconsin.

“We have made difficult decisions in our state, but they are beginning to payoff,” said Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker (R). “The national job figures remind us that we can not rest after one month of good news; while there will be ups and downs along the way, we must help lead the nation to recovery.”

Using seasonally adjusted data, the 12,900 private-sector jobs created in June marks the largest one-month gain in Wisconsin since September 2003. The state’s net new job gain for June is 9,500 jobs, more than half of the nation’s net gain of 18,000 jobs for the same month.

More PATHETIC greedy capitalist pig conservatives, screwing the poor and middle class working folks. PERIOD!

Tom,

As always you are right on some points such as the fact that the Republicans no longer mention Abe Lincoln or Teddy Roosevelt in any literature that they hand out but then again who really does the Democrats mention from their history other than FDR for obvious reasons since we are truyly living in similiar times but unfortunately I think that is as far as history repeating itself will go since OBama is no FDR. One additional point that never ceases to bug me and this applies to both political parties, whens the last time you saw a political sign that indicated what party a give candidate was affliated with? Hell there is no relevant information found on any of these eye pollutants anymore not even a election date for crying out loud. Its almost like they only want those in the know to vote, If you don't know what party they belong to or happen to recall the primary or general election day they don't want your vote? Is that the message? And again this applies to both sides.

Be well,

Tom V.

I understand that Repbulicans may also be government handout recipients in the same way that not every single democrat is a government parasite. What makes my proposal inefficient from a democrats perspective is that while achieving near 100% voter registration on the left, the percentage of registered republicans may also increase (and who would encourage that?). Don't make the perfect the enemy of the good.

Florida's voter disenfranchisement laws are so extreme that the League of Woman Voters will no longer register voters.

Those laws were passed by a Legislature with a veto-proof majority of Republicans (more than two thirds). Yet there are more than 600,000 registered Democrats than registered Republicans in Florida.

How can this happen? In a word, gerrymandering.

Well that boat is about to leave the dock. In 2010 (a very Republican year) more than 63% of the voters passed two "Fair Districts" Constitutional Amendments that "neither favor nor disfavor any political party or incumbent" among other requirements.

The Republican Legislature has $30 million appropriated to fight legal challenges in the current redistricting process, which must comply with the Fair Districts requirements. Imagine that. Using our tax dollars to fight those who want Fair Districts.

The world has truly turned upside down.

Ellis D... that barcode idea? STELLAR! Just cuz I think it would look cool.

I've given up on American "democracy". We're finished. Done. Over. The world belongs to the Just the Facts (who the hell is Dave, by the way?) and the boltoks. They're running the sorry, sorry tea party show.

I'm saving up for the big move somewhere where people actually read books and learn shit.

Not sure where that is, but I'm pretty sure it's not the US of A anymore.
