Nominate THE DONALD!!!

Some people have bad hair days. Donald Trump is having a bad hair life. Have you ever noticed that?

What I love the most about The Donald - and why I cherish his presence in the national train wreck so completely - is the man's genius at being clueless. In fact, if lacking in self awareness were considered a human virtue, Trump would have received the Nobel Prize decades ago. It's bad enough that this nitwit takes himself so seriously, he's delusional enough to think that intelligent people take him with anything other than a grain of moldy salt. It really is rather touching and pathetic when you think about it.

My first experience with Donald Trump was not through the media, but up close and personal. Back in the early eighties I was doing a brass and marble restoration gig in the newly-opened Trump Towers. He stormed into the lobby of the place, barking orders, making belligerent comments to and fro, walking around like he owned the joint - which he did of course. I thought at the time that his complete and total lacking in any humility was a bit unbecoming. At the time I had never heard of him before, nor did I have a clue who the heck he was. Not that I cared.

When he asked a co-worker (an Italian immigrant named Frank Amato) what type of chemical he was using on the marble, Trump's lackey told Frank that, when answering "Mr. Trump's" question, that he should not direct the answer to The Donald, but to the lackey instead. In other words, don't look Mr. Trump in the eye. I was hoping that "Mr. Trump" had a question-or-two for me. I would have stared him down just to spite the contemptible little twit. Alas, he did not.

And now, Trump says that in three days he'll be announcing whether or not he'll be a candidate for the GOP nomination in 2016. I really do hope he goes for it, but my gut instinct tells me that, like 2012, dipping his toes in the stagnant waters of our national political conversation was merely for show and nothing else; another silly and wasted attempt by The Donald to "up his brand" so to speak. He's even gone as far as hinting that he has a secret plan to eliminate ISIS - but that he's not going to reveal it until he's sitting snugly inside the Oval Office. RIGHT! He can blow to kingdom come an organization that is murdering hundreds of innocent people every week but he's going to wait a year-and-a-half before he shares the plan with anyone!
`
John R. "Jack" Degan
`
STATE SECRET: My late father, John R. "Jack" Degan, was at one time the president of the Building Owners and Management Association (BOMA). He once informed me that, although he liked The Donald personally, a lot of the folks in that organization thought that he was a bloviating bag of gas. Now it can be told.

If they ever build a Hall of Fame of Unintentional Comedians, I propose that they give Donald Trump a wing dedicated exclusively to him. This jackass is the rib-tickler supreme. That's what makes the political situation in America such a delight: For an insanity junkie such as I, the current crop of Republican wannabes are too weird to be believed. I sometimes want to pinch myself just to be sure that this isn't a dream-come-true. I so want this guy to make a run for it that I can almost taste it. I know that he's probably going to let me down again, just like he did in 2012. All I have are my dreams.

Maybe he'll surprise me. A Trump-for-pres campaign would be such a gut-busting thing to behold that I'm getting a mild case of the giggles just thinking about it. Oh, please, Donald, please!

I just had a wild thought: Wouldn't it be a hoot if, one day, The Donald held a press conference and revealed to us that for the past forty years, his entire act has been a piece of performance art? That it was all a big joke and that he's been putting us on all these years, and that he's been emulating his secret hero - ANDY KAUFMAN? What an incredible practical joke that would be on us - and so perfectly logical!

Happy Days Are Here Again
by the Jack Hylton Orchestra (1930)

Ken Burns and company used this 1930 recording of Happy Days are Here Again for the closing credits of episode four of The Roosevelts. Considering it's 85 years old the fidelity is amazing. But what I like most about this record is merely how freakin' catchy it is. Check out those xylophones!

I have noticed that nothing gives comedians more joy than finding out his Trumpness is running for POTUS. Bill Maher was close to giddy about it last night. You can just see that comedians, upon hearing that Trump is in the race are thinking, "YES! One more of my kids can go to college!"

One has to wonder though, why a man of his alleged wealth would put himself through the humiliation.

He almost reminds me of a guy I went to school with, who thought he was God's gift to women. If you wanted a date with the hottest girl in the room, all you had to do was wait until he started talking to her (which was inevitable) After a few minutes all you had to do was walk up to her and say "Hey, you wanna get out of here?", and you were in. You were her savior. This poor guy had no clue he repugnant he was to women. Trump has no idea how repugnant he is to the American voter, on BOTH sides of the political coin. He actually drives voters to other candidates.

"The idea of infinite or unlimited growth, which proves so attractive to economists, financiers and experts in technology ... is based on the lie that there is an infinite supply of the earth's goods, and this leads to the planet being squeezed dry at every limit."

"A very solid scientific consensus indicates that we are presently witnessing a disturbing warming of the climatic system. ... A number of scientific studies indicate that most global warming in recent decades is due to the great concentration of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides and others) released mainly as a result of human activity."

"We need to reject a magical conception of the market, which would suggest that the problems can be solved simply by an increase in the profits of companies or individuals."

Account must also be taken of the pollution produced by residue, including dangerous waste present in different areas. Each year hundreds of millions of tons of waste are generated, much of it non-biodegradable, highly toxic and radioactive, from homes and businesses, from construction and demolition sites, from clinical, electronic and industrial sources. The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth. In many parts of the planet, the elderly lament that once beautiful landscapes are now covered with rubbish. Industrial waste and chemical products utilized in cities and agricultural areas can lead to bioaccumulation in the organisms of the local population, even when levels of toxins in those places are low. Frequently no measures are taken until after people's health has been irreversibly affected.

Even as the quality of available water is constantly diminishing, in some places there is a growing tendency, despite its scarcity, to privatize this resource, turning it into a commodity subject to the laws of the market. Yet access to safe drinkable water is a basic and universal human right, since it is essential to human survival and, as such, is a condition for the exercise of other human rights.

In the meantime, economic powers continue to justify the current global system where priority tends to be given to speculation and the pursuit of financial gain, which fail to take the context into account, let alone the effects on human dignity and the natural environment. Here we see how environmental deterioration and human and ethical degradation are closely linked. Many people will deny doing anything wrong because distractions constantly dull our consciousness of just how limited and finite our world really is. As a result, "whatever is fragile, like the environment, is defenceless before the interests of a deified market, which become the only rule."

Okay, back to Trump. He's the perfect GOP candidate. If he wins the nomination there'll be hell toupee.

Trump is the inevitable result of 40 years of political conjuring, mainly by Republicans, but abetted by far too many Democrats as well. He is the inevitable product of anyone who ever argued that our political institutions should be run "like a business." (Like whose businesses? Like Trump's? Like Carly Fiorina's Hewlett Packard?) He is the inevitable product of anyone who ever argued why the government can't balance its books "the way any American family would." He is the inevitable result of the deregulated economy that was deregulated out of a well-cultivated wonder and awe directed at the various masters of the universe. Sooner or later, all of this misbegotten magical thinking was going to burp up a clown like Donald Trump. Sooner or later, the conversion of the institutions of the national legislature into vehicles for polite ratfucking was going to burp up a Trey Gowdy, who will interrogate not the actual Sid Blumenthal, but the one that exists in thousands of fundraising letters and chain e-mails. The politics of this country have dedicated themselves to the pursuit of hallucinations today. Wish I could say I was surprised. - Charles Pierce

Americans have lost faith in our government and our financial system. We know that our leadership is beholden to other "interests" and not us. We know that the economy is in shambles despite the propaganda coming out of Washington and from the "press". We understand Main St. is hurting while Wall St. is (for now) flying high on the mountains of Fed induced debt. And, we know the façade is about to crumble - both right and left sense it. And, both are looking more and more to the "atypical" solution.

Now come Greeks bearing the gift of confirmation that Margaret Thatcher was right about socialist governments: “They always run out of other people’s money.”

Greece, from whose ancient playwrights Western drama descends, is in an absurdist melodrama about securing yet another cash infusion from international creditors.

This would add another boulder to a mountain of debt almost twice the size of Greece’s gross domestic product.

This protracted dispute will result in desirable carnage if Greece defaults, thereby becoming a constructively frightening example to all democracies doling out unsustainable, growth-suppressing entitlements.

In January, Greek voters gave power to the left-wing Syriza party, one third of which, the Economist reports, consists of “Maoists, Marxists and supporters of Che Guevara.”

Voters chose Syriza because it promised to reverse reforms, particularly of pensions and labor laws, demanded by creditors, and to resist new demands for rationality. Tsipras immediately vowed to rehire 12,000 government employees. His shrillness increasing as his options contract, he says the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund are trying to “humiliate” Greece.

How could one humiliate a nation that chooses governments committed to Rumpelstiltskin economics, the belief that the straw of government largesse can be spun into the gold of national wealth?

Tsipras’s approach to mollifying those who hold his nation’s fate in their hands is to say they must respect his “mandate” to resist them. He thinks Greek voters, by making delusional promises to themselves, obligate other European taxpayers to fund them.

Varoufakis’s idea of cooperation is to accuse the creditors whose money Greece has been living on of “fiscal waterboarding.”

It does, however, have in Greece a member whose difficulties are wonderfully didactic.

It cannot be said too often: There cannot be too many socialist smashups. The best of these punish reckless creditors whose lending enables socialists to live, for a while, off of other people’s money. The world, which owes much to ancient Athens’ legacy, including the idea of democracy, is indebted to today’s Athens for the reminder that reality does not respect a democracy’s delusions.

Pope Francis frames his argument in favor of a heavy-handed environmentalism around the idea that climate change hurts the poor the most.

Yet he seems to have little notion of what has helped the world’s poor more than anything: namely, the march of markets and technology, which has lifted billions out of destitution.

Instead, Francis rails against those who “doggedly uphold the myth of progress,” the “modern myth of unlimited material progress,” and the “myths of modernity,” including “unlimited progress.”

Yet after levying these warnings against progress, the pope calls for a bigger effort to develop sources of renewable energy. Exactly how will this be accomplished, except through giant advances in technology?

Maybe if the Pope wants to help the poor he can start selling all the gold and art in the Vatican instead of talking through his ahole.

Dylann Roof is so perfect in his throwback racist Right-wing, white supremacist evil that he is a system shock. Intentionally or not, Roof further exposed the moral rot of today's Republican Party as they ran away from how he is their monster, and his rampage was racist and not "anti-Christian" as the GOP's propagandists originally suggested. Roof's murder spree has also, and again, demonstrated how the commercial mainstream corporate news media is incapable of having an adult, mature, and intelligent conversation about white supremacy and domestic terrorism.
