Stinky Water in Flint

Image result for protests in flint michiganBack in the day they would herd "undesirables" into gas chambers. Things are a bit more subtle in 2016. Gee, we really do live in interesting times. We really do!

Less than two years ago, in an effort to save Michigan a few bucks, the right wing government of that state decided that it would be a perfectly grand idea to switch the drinking water of the city of Flint from the Great Lakes to the Flint River - an industrial sewer. The result of this brilliant decision by Governor Rick Snyder is that the children of that doomed city have effectively been poisoned.

Keep voting Republican.

Image result for protests in flint michiganEmails and documents attained by various journalists via the Freedom of Information Act have proven - beyond a tainted molecule of a doubt - that, almost from the very moment they switched the pipes, the elected officials of the state of Michigan were aware of the magnitude and scope of the environmental catastrophe they had unleashed on the poor citizens of Flint. For a year-and-a-half they worked round the clock to cover up their complicity in the crime. Concerned mothers who sought desperately to seek answers to the questions they asked about the declining health of their children were dismissed as psychos, beggars and thieves; the most vulnerable, the children and the elderly, continued to bathe in and drink of the poisoned water.

This would not have happened if Flint had been a community of affluence. This would not have happened had the residents of Flint not been predominantly African American and poverty stricken. The message could not have been clearer had it been etched in gold:

"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth"?

Nah!

To hell with the meek.

Don't try to kid yourselves into believing that this was some sort of industrial "accident". When their plans for the water of Flint were made public, alarm bells were sounded from all corners. It didn't matter as far as Governor Rick was concerned. There were a few bucks to be saved and - come hell or rancid water - he was gonna save 'em.

Are we at the point yet where we can agree that conservatism is destroying this country? How far into the abyss are we willing to hurl ourselves? These people aren't merely incompetent politicians; they're criminally insane. When are we going to wake up and smell the elephant shit?

This is dark comedy at its darkest.

This piece by Flint native Stephen Rodrick, is in this week's Rolling Stone. It ought to be read by everyone with a pulse:

Who Poisoned Flint?/

Was this a great country or what?

AFTERTHOUGHT, 10 PM:

Interesting. I went to the atlas on my blog tonight. It tells me where in the world I am being read at any given time. At this hour I am being read in the towns of Snohomish, Washington and Schwenksville, Pennsylvavia. Who would have dreamed?

A tip of the hat to the kind people of Snohomish and Schwenksville!

Even ISIS is impressed with Gov Snyder and his Emergency Manger! But they are not finished yet, people who do not want to pay their water bill because it is unusable will have their water shut off.
And since you cannot raise kids in a house with out running water, it is illegal, they want child services to start taking the kids away.

If nobody goes to jail over this clear cut case of home grown terrorism then nothing is illegal anymore.

You forgot to mention how this all started. This is what happens when elected officials are replaced by a dictator making the decisions. Based on the poverty of the city the elected city officials were replaced by an administrator whose decisions were final without discussion, debate, a vote, or any other Democratic process. Beware cities in financial trouble, which could mean MANY cities as the economy bankrupts other cities. Another great Republican law.

Right Tom, another liberal bitch secession which solved nothing. Maybe these Michigan crybabies should have elected a Democrat rather than a Republican as head of their State. There is consequences for electing idiots who don't care about people. Now they have to live with their choice, tough shit. Just as America elected Bush, twice, and now America cries about his decisions. I have no sympathy. They got the leadership they voted for. They actually elected an anti-American who passed a law allowing decisions to be made by an unelected dictator. You and Michael Moore should have a good cry and spend your time educating the idiot residents who voted for this kind of leadership. Flint is a ghost town now, spend your water donations on helping families relocate to another city, then they can elect another idiot and start the process all over again. It will take less money to relocate them, than to re-pipe the whole town.

“City of Flint Water System Questions & Answers” – Dept. of Public Works (1/13/15)
and
“Don’t Blame EM for Flint Water Disaster” – Detroit News (Early)

That is, for those who like boring facts and not ideologically-laced rants.

Could it be that the problem (and , yes, it is a bad problem) was the result of bad decision-making and unforeseen issues causing planning problems - starting at the City level all the way up to the State (even federal) level? Folks that don’t actually plan, engineer, build, maintain and run the infrastructure (which is an increasing part of the populace) think pure, clean water coming out of the tap for (compared to the rest of the world) dirt cheap prices is magic (and an inalienable right). No, it’s the result of hard work and difficult planning. And, issues can happen – and did – no argument. The city is responsible, the State has some culpability, and even the federal EPA as well. So, take your pick. But enough of the race-baiting crap as if the Governor was holed away in his office rubbing his hands together in glee as the people of Flint suffered. Flint has the same problem MANY municipalities and states have – THEY’RE BROKE! Get used to it – broke is the new norm in the US, folks. No evidence for racial attacks here.

Don’t be a part of the idiocracy that believes everything the fat guy with glasses (who lives in a mansion and likes to parade around as the “people’s man”) says.

I just read an article that revealed that they knew about this problem for far longer than they admitted. Emails have been uncovered stating so and they had water trucked in for all the city officials to drink while every body drank the toxic polluted water.

So that means it was deliberate, they should get Ken Starr to investigate Watergazi.

It isn't even enough to poison the children of Flint. Now his one party dictatorship is out to suppress voters again. They want to eliminate straight party ticket voting. Why do they once again want to eliminate choices for voters? Too many vote for Democrats for one thing. It would also mean longer lines, and longer lines mean fewer voters.

Hey Tom,

Do you think the GOP was also behind the Gold King Mine waste water spill?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_Gold_King_Mine_waste_water_spill

The 2015 Gold King Mine waste water spill is a 2015 environmental disaster at the Gold King Mine near Silverton, Colorado.[1] On August 5, 2015, EPA personnel along with workers for Environmental Restoration LLC (a Fenton, Missouri, company under EPA contract to mitigate pollutants from the closed mine) caused the release of toxic wastewater when attempting to add a tap to the tailing pond for the mine.[2] Before the incident, the local jurisdictions refused Superfund money to cleanup the regions' derelict mines due to a fear of lost tourism. Following the spill, the local government of Silverton decided to accept Superfund money to fully remediate the mine.[3]

Workers accidentally destroyed the dam holding back the pond, spilling three million US gallons (11 ML) of mine waste water and tailings, including heavy metals such as cadmium and lead, and other toxic elements, such as arsenic,[4] into Cement Creek, a tributary of the Animas River in Colorado.[5] The EPA was criticized for not warning Colorado and New Mexico until the day after the waste water spilled.

Count the years Dave. You will find a Republican majority in the House/Congress under both Obama and Clinton for a majority of their terms. Republican policies have won the day over the last 40 years. Republicans have moved further to the right, so have Democrats. Traditional Democratic policies which helped create a great middle class haven't been the priority for Democrats for decades. Bernie is talking those policies, but the country (even a majority of Democrats) haven't embraced those policies since before Reagen. Hillary is a perfect example of how Democrats have moved more to the right. Hillary IS a corporate Democrat. Obama is the most conservative Democrat to hold the presidency, in over 100 years. I'll take your last sentence, but you went on for two paragraphgs before you made a slight four word mention of the American people. The reality is more Americans agree with Bernie than with Trump. A small ray of light, but insufficient to overcome the darkness of an entrenched power structure. It no longer matters what most Americans want. They are not represented as much as the Kochs and Waltons and Wall Street.

Flint residents didn’t want lead in their water, or their local government seized by State Republicans.

Maybe one can say the non-voting majority got what they deserved, for their failure to participate in the political process. Either way, in these times both parties prefer to represent their donors over most of the people.

Dayne Walling (born March 3, 1974) was the mayor of Flint, Michigan from 2009 to 2015. Although the Flint mayor's office is a nonpartisan position, Walling is a member of the Democratic Party.

Flint water crisis

In 2014, the City of Flint began undertaking a water supply switch-over from Lake Huron to the Flint River.[14] After the switch was made, residents immediately complained about the smell, taste, and color of the water, as well as skin problems after bathing.[15] State and city officials reassured the public that Flint's water was safe, with Mayor Walling personally testifying to its safety by drinking the water on local television and tweeting that he and his family drink Flint water every day.[16][17]

In early September 2015, Walling requested $10 million from the state government to replace water service lines with lead or lead solder and for the city to step up development of a corrosion control plan to be finished by the end of the year.[18] After meeting with the lead doctor on the Hurley Hospital lead study to Walling, he pushed the city to issue an advisory on lead while the state still had issue with the study.[19] Doctors recommended ending the use of the Flint river as a water supply, but were told in a meeting with Walling and other city officials that such a move would bankrupt the city.[18]

At 9:13 AM, Blogger Mozart1220 said...

I noticed that "Just the facts" left out one big one. From the SAME Page as his post:

"On November 8, 2011, Walling defeated Buchanan 8,819 votes (56%) to 6,868 votes (44%). That same day, the Michigan State review panel declared the City of Flint to be in state of a "local government financial emergency".His authority as Flint Mayor was superseded by the appointment by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder of Michael Brown as the city's Emergency Manager on November 29 effective December 1."

So in reality, it was not Walling, but Gov. Snyder that is at fault here.

See how things look a bit different when you tell the WHOLE story?

(CNN)For all the complaints from Democrats about the amount of big money in politics, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have raised a staggering amount of cash.

Clinton's campaign raised $112 million in 2015, and top Democratic billionaire donor George Soros recently gave $6 million to her super PAC, according to new figures filed with the Federal Election Commission Sunday night.

Organizations Funded Directly by George Soros and his Open Society Institute

Advancement Project: This organization works to organize "communities of color" into politically cohesive units while disseminating its leftist worldviews and values as broadly as possible by way of a sophisticated communications department.

Air America Radio: Now defunct, this was a self-identified "liberal" radio network.

All of Us or None: This organization seeks to change voting laws -- which vary from state to state -- so as to allow ex-inmates, parolees, and even current inmates to cast their ballots in political elections.

Alliance for Justice: Best known for its activism vis a vis the appointment of federal judges, this group consistently depicts Republican judicial nominees as "extremists."

America Coming Together: Soros played a major role in creating this group, whose purpose was to coordinate and organize pro-Democrat voter-mobilization programs.
America Votes: Soros also played a major role in creating this group, whose get-out-the-vote campaigns targeted likely Democratic voters.

America's Voice: This open-borders group seeks to promote “comprehensive” immigration reform that includes a robust agenda in favor of amnesty for illegal aliens.

American Bar Association Commission on Immigration Policy: This organization "opposes laws that require employers and persons providing education, health care, or other social services to verify citizenship or immigration status."

American Bridge 21st Century: This Super PAC conducts opposition research designed to help Democratic political candidates defeat their Republican foes.

American Civil Liberties Union: This group opposes virtually all post-9/11 national security measures enacted by the U.S. government. It supports open borders, has rushed to the defense of suspected terrorists and their abettors, and appointed former New Left terrorist Bernardine Dohrn to its Advisory Board

American Constitution Society for Law and Policy: This Washington, DC-based think tank seeks to move American jurisprudence to the left by recruiting, indoctrinating, and mobilizing young law students, helping them acquire positions of power. It also provides leftist Democrats with a bully pulpit from which to denounce their political adversaries.

American Family Voices: This group creates and coordinates media campaigns charging Republicans with wrongdoing.

American Federation of Teachers: After longtime AFT President Albert Shanker died in in 1997, he was succeeded by Sandra Feldman, who slowly “re-branded” the union, allying it with some of the most powerful left-wing elements of the New Labor Movement. When Feldman died in 2004, Edward McElroy took her place, followed by Randi Weingarten in 2008. All of them kept the union on the leftward course it had adopted in its post-Shanker period.

American Friends Service Committee: This group views the United States as the principal cause of human suffering around the world. As such, it favors America's unilateral disarmament, the dissolution of American borders, amnesty for illegal aliens, the abolition of the death penalty, and the repeal of the Patriot Act.
American Immigration Council: This non-profit organization is a prominent member of the open-borders lobby. It advocates expanded rights and amnesty for illegal aliens residing in the U.S.

American Immigration Law Foundation: This group supports amnesty for illegal aliens, on whose behalf it litigates against the U.S. government.

American Independent News Network: This organization promotes "impact journalism" that advocates progressive change.

American Institute for Social Justice: AISJ's goal is to produce skilled community organizers who can “transform poor communities” by agitating for increased government spending on city services, drug interdiction, crime prevention, housing, public-sector jobs, access to healthcare, and public schools.

American Library Association: This group has been an outspoken critic of the Bush administration's War on Terror -- most particularly, Section 215 of the USA Patriot Act, which it calls "a present danger to the constitutional rights and privacy rights of library users."

The American Prospect, Inc.: This corporation trains and mentors young leftwing journalists, and organizes strategy meetings for leftist leaders.

Amnesty International: This organization directs a grossly disproportionate share of its criticism for human rights violations at the United States and Israel.

Applied Research Center: Viewing the United States as a nation where “structural racism” is deeply “embedded in the fabric of society,” ARC seeks to "build a fair and equal society" by demanding “concrete change from our most powerful institutions."

Arab American Institute Foundation: The Arab American Institute denounces the purportedly widespread civil liberties violations directed against Arab Americans in the post-9/11 period, and characterizes Israel as a brutal oppressor of the Palestinian people.

Aspen Institute: This organization promotes radical environmentalism and views America as a nation plagued by deep-seated “structural racism.”

Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now: This group conducts voter mobilization drives on behalf of leftist Democrats. These initiatives have been notoriously marred by fraud and corruption.

Ballot Initiative Strategy Center: This organization seeks to advance “a national progressive strategy” by means of ballot measures—state-level legislative proposals that pass successfully through a petition (“initiative”) process and are then voted upon by the public.

Bill of Rights Defense Committee: This group provides a detailed blueprint for activists interested in getting their local towns, cities, and even college campuses to publicly declare their opposition to the Patriot Act, and to designate themselves "Civil Liberties Safe Zones." The organization also came to the defense of self-described radical attorney Lynne Stewart, who was convicted in 2005 of providing material support for terrorism.

Hey DD,

It was you who brought up the Koch's.. It's you that opened the door to the subject of donations from the wealthy, not me. You are correct on one thing, I should have noted when the quote from CNN was over and the list of liberal benefactors of Soros started, but I thought readers would be smarter and figure that out. Forgot to take into account you are one of the readers.

If you like, I'll give you a list for the charitable organizations the Koch Brothers and George Soros have donated to so you can compare, but I doubt you will like that list either.

It's amazing how you go into liberal hyper speed as soon as I post truth about just on of the liberal benefactors, George Soros one of the 30 richest people in the WORLD!

Since you have now opened the topic of how far right the Democrat party has moved (a statement I'd love you to support, but I'm not holding my breath) just what is the different between socialism and the Democrat Party?

I'd be careful of who you call a shill if I were (THANK GOD I'M NOT!) you. And evil, but exposing YOUR hypocrisy? Please!

"one-party dictatorship." You mean like when the Democrats controlled the Congress and the White House? That kind of dictatorship?

Maybe you were not aware of this but the reason there are political party's is to win elections. Get over it, you only bitch when a conservative wins.

And as far as topic goes, I hope any and all the people responsible for the Flint, MI water problem get the same punishment as all those responsible for 2015 Gold King Mine waste water spill.

There, you happy now?

Blaming the EPA for their own failures is nothing new for Republicans. It’s part of their paradigm of making sure to be so incompetent at governing that people lose faith in government, and then buy their arguments to let them make a profit off of people by privatizing what should be public.

Republicans have been working to defund and unman the EPA for years. So then when the EPA doesn’t do a stellar job, they yell about the incompetence

In other words, FUCK YOU CHUCK.

Sorry if this too much for you to understand. Amazing that you find way to blame the Republicans for the EPA's failure. Hey, how many budgets did the Senate pass under Harry Reid? Could fubds for the EPA's budget been in those un-passed budgets?

Simply psychopathic. If all of Bernie supporters are as dense as those who post here, well, it's a sad day in American when we have bred so many stupid ignorant people.

Based on the responses to my post, the problem is I haven't responded or "peeped" as they required me to.
Sorry, I'm not brain dead like your peers. I think for myself. I can see the double standard you hold anyone to the right of you. Which for your information is the majority of Americans

The funniest thing about Chucky's "lists" is that 90% of the things Soros supports are GOOD THINGS.The rest are just misrepresentatins.

Arab American Institute Foundation: The Arab American Institute denounces the purportedly widespread civil liberties violations directed against Arab Americans in the post-9/11 period, and characterizes Israel as a brutal oppressor of the Palestinian people.

Aspen Institute: This organization promotes radical environmentalism and views America as a nation plagued by deep-seated “structural racism.”

just a few that are good things.

And Republicans don't have voter drives to get more GOP voters?

OH MY GOD!!! Leftists breathe oxygen and eat food! We must oppose these thungs!!!

If they wanted something else Dave, why did they vote for these criminals? Their past decisions as a party was plenty of evidence they had no concern for people, so when a water problem showed up what do people who don't care about people do? This easily could have been predicted given the proven immoral leadership the Republicans have perused for decades. As P.T. Barnum said, "there's a sucker born every minute........." Barnum became rich off the gullibility and stupidity of Americans, and so has the Republican party.

At 3:29 PM, Blogger Dave Dubya said...

Good question. In a word, "beliefs". Propaganda works. "Free market", "Job creators", "Family values", "Stand your ground", "Guns, God and gays", "selling baby parts", "liberals are commies" and the rest of their bumper sticker dogma reaches the low-information voters. But it's still the indifference, apathy, or disengagement of most non-voters that allows the small minority to have the greater voice.

Representative Democracy fails when "money is free speech", and it will always fail when most people don't participate.

This is why Republicans are actively suppressing voter registration, voting times, and access to polls.

The first rule of fascism is to subvert and dismantle democracy. Same thing with Republicans.

I hope any and all the people responsible for the Flint, MI water problem get the same punishment as all those responsible for 2015 Gold King Mine waste water spill.

No EPA official has been fired.

In other words, Chuckie blames them, and doesn't want the Republicans to be held accountable. What he doesn't want is for Michigan Republicans to be dead, like the mine owners who left the mess in the first place. Can't blame the holy "Job creators" for pollution, can't we?

And Chuckie doesn't want them to be accountable. "Personal responsibility"? HA. They can shove that up where their heads are.

A lot of children are tragically poisoned thanks to the party of the Kochs. We have noted the lack of concern from old "not racist" Chuck. He cares nothing for Flint residents.

Does anyone wonder why?

Can you list the contributions Soros or his PAC have made to charity, like the Red Cross, PBS, NPR? You recall what some said to my pointing out in the past that the Koch's gave a lot of $ to things like PBS? "They could/should give more so it doesn't count!" How much has the top 30 wealthy person in the world given to PBS, or the Red Cross?

Why am I not surprised that Davy would fail to see how 50 years of the War on Poverty has NOT taught the poor how to become wealthy, but instead has taught them how to become dependent of the Govt for their needs.

Class envy instead of improving one's class is the hallmark of liberalism today.

Class Warfare is what they train, not how to be victorious over poverty, heaven knows they've had enough time and enough resources to do that, but to enlist more Americans in the life style of poverty. If it were not so, the War would be over.

do you realize that if the recent $1 billion lottery had been evenly distributed between all American citizens, every one of us would be a millionaire? So instead of doing what we are doing now, (that isn't working as we are still at war), how bout taking all the money being spent on the War on Poverty and dividing it up between each of us? Tax free? You tell me. But it sure would end the BS liberals have been spouting for the past 50 plus years. And the need for growing govt.

I bet there will be a problem with this idea, crap some people would complain if they were hung with a new rope.

Hit it liberal psychopaths! I'm pretty sure I know what your going to say about this.

Cuckie, I cannot check your facts because Fox news makes me vomit. But then, I don't have to because you have never been right about anything.

If the GOP cares for the poor, why do they kill every program that helps them?

And given that there are about 400 MILLION American citizens, that Billion dollars would not give us enough to get a big Mac and Fries. Maybe a 3rd grade math class would help you.

But take the 12 BILLION we hand oil companies in subsidies, and we provide FULL HEALTHCARE to all of us. Take HALF of the military budget and we feed and house ALL the homeless.

You are right about "class warfare" though. The uber rich are waging war aginst the middle class. They wan an America with TWO classes. A RULING class, and a SERVICE class. Wealth has been "redistributed" from the people doing all the work and paying all the taxes, to the pockets of those who sit in ivory towers and bet on AMerica to fail.

At 9:09 PM, Blogger Unknown said...

CREATING poor people (not to mention combat vets) this country will move forward,

You mean like this

The U.S. has fallen from the 6th freest economy in the world, when President Barack Obama took office, to 11th place in 2016. America’s declining score in the index is closely related to rapidly rising government spending, subsidies, and bailouts.

Since early 2009:

Government spending has exploded, amounting to $29,867 per household in 2015.
The national debt has risen to $125,000 for every tax-filing household in America—a total over $18 trillion.
The government takeover of health care is raising prices and disrupting markets.
Bailouts and new government regulations have increased uncertainty, stifling investment and job creation.

This is not something to take lightly. Economic freedom is the foundation of U.S. economic strength, and economic strength is the foundation of America’s high living standards, military power, and status as a world leader. The perils of losing economic freedom are not fictional.

At 12:35 AM, Blogger Mozart1220 said...

ANd WHY has that happened CHuckles? MAYBE it was because the GOP blocked every effort to improve the economy? They shut down the government in a petulent tantrum, they refused to increase the debt ceiling so we could pay Bush's bills, they outsource jobs, cut taxes for the rich, hand BILLIONS in taxpayer dollars over to big oil and big pharma in subsidies, and we spend more on the freaking military than the next 19 countries COMBINED, and 18 of them are ALLIES!

But then you cut funding for anything that helps the poor, spend hundreds of millions on 60 votes to repeal Obamacare (with nothing to replace it) "investigate" H. Clinton 12 times over Benghazi and E-mails (while finding no evidence of wrongdoing) testing welfare recipients for drugs without cause (in violation of the 4th amendmant)

Trashing the economy, and then blaming it on the guy trying to clean it up makes you look pretty stupid, but then I guess you are used to it by now.

Dave, I didn't even read that far back in the thread to see who started first with the whole Nazi thread. Further, I really don't care. The same juvenile name-calling is still going on here, I see. I simply pointed out that the Nazi Party was the German national socialist party. That is historical fact.

Your mouth-foaming diatribe and Mozart-like rant does nothing to change that. Further much of what was done under the Nazi party was socialistic in nature. Yes it absolutely warped into fascism, as the inevitable consequences of over-reach under Hitler's leadership. Respectfully, I really don't think there is anything you could teach me about history, sir. From what I have seen in the past regarding FDR and America history, your version is the revisionist kind, my friend.

At 9:52 PM, Blogger Dave Dubya said...

TP,

When Mozart correctly said Nazis were fascists, you deliberately associated socialism with Nazis. National socialism was not socialism. It was a fascist dictatorship.

NOT Bernie Sanders.

I tried to explain the concept of national socialism was Hitler’s, not Bernie Sanders, or any other democratic socialist.

What defined the Nazis? What made them evil? To say “their socialism” is an insult to the truth, and to our veterans and all victims of fascism. It was their fascist totalitarian regime, forging nationalism, militarism and racism (Look to the Right for these qualities.) into the greatest man-made hell for humanity.

Yes, “much of what was done under the Nazi party was socialistic in nature”. This is true, but maybe not as you intended.

Healthcare was a continuation from earlier universal availability The autobahn, jobs programs, parks, dams, canals, and other public works were also socialistic in nature.

Now try this.

Much of what was done under the Republican party was socialistic in nature.

There was the time when sane and compassionate republicans accepted Social Security and even Medicare as good for Americans. They supported public education, infrastructure, and national parks.

Now republicans boast about destroying public services, privatizing Social Security, and cutting food stamps.

I suppose all of what I say is seen through the filter of “your version is the revisionist kind, my friend”.

What is deemed “revisionist kind” seems to be filtered from the perspective that associates Nazis more with socialism than fascism, and believes in Bush and Cheney’s nukular aluminum tubes, and Saddam being in cahoots with al-Qaeda.

We seem to have a large barrier between our understandings of some historical facts. You’d be surprised how much history I know. You are correct. I can’t teach you. No one can teach what you don’t want to learn. This is proven by your belief in big oil PR and Republican echo chamber denial of real climate change. The hottest years on record mean nothing to the view that sees what amounts to a global conspiracy of evil climate scientists.

Enough of that.

Now for the point: You and the troll played the Nazi card.

And now the message: Nazis have no place in this discussion.

Who am I kidding? There is no discussion.

Never mind. ;)
