What Price Donald?

"Not one of them can win, but one must. That's the paradox of the race for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, fast becoming the signature event in the history of black comedy."
Matt Taibbi
From this week's Rolling Stone
That's what I've been saying for months, and yet Taibbi says it so much better than I. Hats off to the dude; he knocks 'em out of the park every time.
Image result for donald trumpIt wasn't supposed to come to this. And yet, this is the price that "the party of Abraham Lincoln" is paying for its three-decades-plus courtship of a class of people that had historically been politically apathetic: the terminally insane. Today the chickens have come home to roost in the guise of Donald Trump. Before this gets any better for the panic-stricken heads of the Republican National Committee, it's going to get worse. Five months ago, the very idea of the Donald receiving the GOP nod at next summer's convention was about was about as fanciful as Eric Clapton recording an entire LP of covers by Freddie and the Dreamers. Today, I'm not so sure.
You've got to wonder exactly what is going on inside the minds of your average Republican primary voter - particularly in the South and Midwest. The more this guy steps in it, the higher his stock continues to rise among these people. From mocking a New York Times Reporter with a neurological disorder - to insisting that all Muslims be registered and monitored by Big Brother - to referring to Mexican immigrants as rapists and drug dealers - he seems unable to offend any of these people. Even when he proclaimed that Iowans were idiots because his poll numbers were somewhat lagging in that state, he appears not to have offended a soul. You gotta wonder. You really do.

Image result for donald trump supportersThis is not to say that Donald Trump is a fool. I honesty don't think that he really believes one/tenth of the nonsense he adds to the national political conversation. He knows full well that - at least in this day and age - in order to get the Republican nomination, a candidate has to stomp around the country saying a lot of mind-bendingly stupid things. Once he gets the nomination (assuming that he does indeed get it), it will be quite an amusing thing watching him slither back from the extreme-right to the center-right during the general election. There's also this uncomfortable factor: forgetting his all-too-numerous faults as a candidate, there is (with me at least) a grudging admiration for the guy. I have always appreciated anyone with moxie - and Trump has moxie to spare. If the definition of successful parenting is instilling self-confidence in a child, Donald Trump's mom and dad were the best parents in history.

Sometimes I wonder if he is some sort of double agent doing espionage work for the opposition party. At one time he described himself as a "liberal", so anything is possible I suppose. The damage he is doing to that party is palpable and incalculable.

Trump's candidacy almost guarantees that for the first time in one-hundred and sixty years, one Democratic administration will be followed into the White House by another Democratic administration. The last time that happened was on March 4, 1957 when Franklin Pierce tossed the keys to the executive mansion over to pathetic old James Buchanan. It hasn't happened since. It will happen again on  Inauguration Day 2017 - mark my words, boys and girls. The curse is being broken. Aren't these interesting times?

 And yet, in spite of all these nasty little developments, progressives across the land are setting themselves up for a huge let down. For one thing, Hillary  Clinton is not the second coming of Eleanor Roosevelt - that's for damned sure.  And even if she ends up surprising us, she'll still have to deal with the aggravations from the disloyal opposition that her husband and Barack Obama had to deal with during their respective tenures. While the Republicans almost certainly have become virtually unelectable on a national level, they won't be going away any time soon. Barring a miracle, they'll still control the house and the senate for the foreseeable future. There's still no end to the damage that they can and will do. This is something we'll just have to live with.
Isn't this a time?

It has been said the TParty was set up by KRove. Its function was to rile up the GOP electorate with anger - enough so they might even vote . . . Looking backward it obviously got out of hand!
This new phenomenon, DTrump and company, is setting a similar standard in that he is also riling up the GOP - but doing it in a way that dredges and makes stuff up from the bottom of the pond.
DTrump will go away - I bet by the time the Iowa caucuses begin or end. As he has said 'Iowans are idiots' . . a loss will be a personal embarrassment.

At 7:02 PM, Blogger T. Paine said...

Trump has voted for many a Democrat in his time. He has said that ""the economy does better under the Democrats". He has in the past refused to support the GOP nominee if it isn't him. He has openly defended Planned Parenthood. He has approved of exceptions to abortion bans. He has supported a single-payer health care system. He has backed an "assault weapons" ban. He had advocated in the past for a one-time 14.25% additional tax on the wealthy to erase the national debt. He has befriended many liberals, even in his personal life to the point of inviting the Clintons to his wedding.

With all of that said, I think the number of truly conservative Republicans supporting Trump is very small. Indeed, the Tea Party folks seem to be throwing their support more in the direction of Cruz as the Iowa caucus approaches. I think, with Trumps liberal past, that many of his supporters tend to be disaffected moderates. I think he has captured many of the Reagan Democrats that are wary of illegal immigration further eroding the job market.

In other words, I doubt very seriously that it is the conservative base that is backing Trump. I think this is why you will continue to see him slip in the polls as the primaries approach and the conservative base starts to pay more attention to details.

We have had a string of progressives as president for the last three or four oval office holders. We do NOT need another one. Conservatives desperately understand that, and will not vote for Trump accordingly.

If we do, we will be handing the office over to the egregiously corrupt and incompetent Hillary. We will not survive as a nation of freedom under the rule of law if that comes to pass.

I'm not sure of Mr. Hansen's exact sources, but it's apparent that you get yours exclusively from the mainstream media. I suggest that you dig deeper.

Yes, the world would be more peaceful and less fascist.

Mr. Morre, please stick with the topic at hand. You consistently and repeatedly attempt to hijack the discussion on this blog to address your own pet peeves and stubbornly insular viewpoints about unrelated subjects. ...we’re going to have to do things that we never did before. And some people are going to be upset about it, but I think that now everybody is feeling that security is going to rule… And so we’re going to have to do certain things that were frankly unthinkable a year ago…

These are the words of a man who embraces totalitarianism -- a man who wants to put refugees in detention centers and create a database about them.

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.
~~~Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984)
People such as Trump pander to the lowest and most morbid instincts of people going through national crisis and turmoil; to those who feel hate and derision of other groups is the answer, and their slogans and hate-speech are sure signs of a country moving toward nationalistic superiority over all others. They initiate the small steps toward an out-and-out and very visible police state.
Mr. Trump may very well be the "closer" that they're looking for. If not, I'm sure Hillary Clinton will be able to pull off the job. Either way, we're in for the ride of our lives.
I have to be frank with you.
What makes you believe your source of information has the real story, the real truth and all other sources are questionable?
What makes you think that your information sources do not have an agenda?
My question to Mr. Hansen is a simply one, what are the sources that would support his claims about the Republican presidential candidates?
This smacks of the same type of hit and run politics that democrats are not held accountable Harry Reid's claim form the Senate floor that Romney had not paid his income taxes. Yet any conservative regardless of political party is held up to ridicule for any statement they make and amount of explaining or defending will satisfy the left. (I.E. Sarah Palin for example)
I agree with you but for different reasons that Clinton would be bad for America if elected, I agree with you that President Trump would be bad for America, but for different reasons. Having said that, we would not agree on who would be best. And there is the rub.
I believe it is not in the best interests of America to continue our current immigration/refugee policy. I believe that to do so is allowing a Trojan horse to cross our borders. I believe the immagration laws must be enforced and obeyed. That is not totalitarianism, that is the rule of law, not of man.
I believe for someone to become upset over the M&M comparison because it's people we are talking about smacks of the highest hypocrisy when those people ignore the humanity of those innocent victims of abortion, and demand their names. As you rightly pointed Pastor's Niemoller's out, there was no one to speak for him when he remained silent.
Here are a few of the names given to those murdered by Dr. Gosnell
Baby Adam( aborted at 7 1/2 months six pounds weight)
Baby Michael (killed at 28 weeks)
Baby Alex ( breathed for 20 minutes after delivery)
Baby Chris ( delivered into the toilet and was seen swimming there)
Baby Andy ( heard to whine)
Who was there for these when the murder came for them?
Chuck Morre: "What makes you believe your source of information has the real story, the real truth and all other sources are questionable?"
Occam's razor. Usually, given all competing possibilities, the answer containing the fewest assumptions is closer to the truth. In most cases, the simplest answer revolves around who has the motive, and who profits. In a nutshell, "Cui bono".
"What makes you think that your information sources do not have an agenda?"
Obviously, everyone has an agenda. I personally believe the left's agenda is closer to the truth. Over time this has proven to be true.
"Who was there for these when the murder came for [aborted fetuses]? You?"
At 8:24 PM, Anonymous Victor David said...
Dear Chuck Morre -
Please learn to read and comprehend. Yes, 3000 died on 9/11, but the phrase "since 9/11" does not include 9/11. And you might want to know that the data that supports this assertion comes not only from the United States Military Academy’s Combating Terrorism Center, the Global Terrorism Database maintained by the Start Center at the University of Maryland, but from a survey of law enforcement agencies around the country.
Now, you can write that all of as left-wing propaganda - as I suspect you will because it doesn't fit your narrative - but it doesn't make it so. Yes, terrorism from extremists inspired by Al Qaeda and the Islamic State does indeed exist, but there is a growing problem of home-grown terrorism from right-wing extremists. This is not just my opinion; it's also the viewpoint of quite a few of those in law enforcement.
Of course, if you're the conspiracy type, you can twist that around your pretzel logic somehow and come up with something like how Muslims have infiltrated law enforcement everywhere - but again, it doesn't make it so.
At 8:28 PM, Anonymous Victor David said...
p.s. Also, Dave didn't say "more Americans have been killed by right wingers since 9/11 than were killed on 9/11" (as you repeated). He said "Since 9-11 more Americans have been killed by Chuckie's fellow Right Wing extremists than by the Muslims they hate."
Again, reading AND comprehension. They're your friends. Oh, and not making shit up.
Snowflake Chuckie, (As evidenced by his chronic projection, he is more likely to have the characteristics of "snowflake") he has questions, damn it!
Snowflake Chuckie wonders, "More killed by right wing extremists?"
Yes! Surprise!
Or not really.
The answer is YES! Even MORE than the Fort Hood Shootings.
This is exactly what we've saying.
We, being the sane people here, and the United States Military Academy’s Combating Terrorism Center, the Global Terrorism Database maintained by the Start Center at the University of Maryland, AND from a survey of law enforcement agencies around the country.
Since 9-11 more Americans have been, and are being killed, by Right Wing extremists than by all the Muslims they hate. And this is why Snowflake Chuckie is desperately doing his best to distract from that reality by his "Better blame liberals" lies. Amirite again?
So as long as it's not a Muslim, Chuckie shows us he's quite the Right Wing terrorist sympathizer. He believes in their cause and will dedicate his life to pushing their propaganda.
Condomboy, you are a worthless piece of shit and you are too stupid to even put together a witty insult. From now on I will attack and insult you constantly as you have done for four years. You have turned this site into an insult blog so I am going to turn the tables on you, we will see how you like it asshole.
One post back, you laid out a clear and compelling argument regarding the right for a woman to have her choices between herself and her god. Near the end, you asked an interesting and thoughtful questions of Chuck Morre and asked him to "be honest" in his reply. Of course, he didn't reply.
Hate to break it to you Dave, but asking Chuck to "be honest" isn't going to work. I've followed a lot of these conversations and even chimed in from time to time. Chuck is not about to "be honest." In fact, that's what I find repugnant about many of the right-wing. It's not their difference of viewpoint, it's their fundamental intellectual dishonesty. When presented with facts, they deflect, attack the source and/or attack the messenger. I could respect their principles if that's what they really were. But they're not; their so-called "principles" are one sided.
Example: it's wrong to criticize the president during time of war. Well, I don't agree, but okay, I can respect that - if you're consistent. However, when the administration changes to one they don't like, suddenly it's okay to criticize the president again. This is a fundamental character dishonesty that does not deserve respect.
I've asked questions of people such as Chuck, questions that might cause them to as least consider something other than their own viewpoint. And some do respond. But others, such as Chuck, never do. It's like they wait a while and pretend they didn't hear you.
I like Tom's blog and his writing style. But the comments section is turning into a cesspool. There can be some good thoughts here, but they're getting harder to find amid the juvenile name-twisting and name-calling. I know Tom has an anything-goes policy, but I hope someday he'll reconsider, start moderating, start scrubbing the shit stains off the comment wall, so to speak.
You seem to be blind to the fact that Davy refuses ever to answer my question but instead replies with questions of his own or dives into the use of ad hominem
When he responds as you wish I would we could have a dialog. Until them I will fight fire with fire
Look up name and name twisting and you will find it started with Davy. He is your source of discontent
At 9:59 AM, Blogger Chuck Morre said...
I have never said it was wrong to critiqued a president while we are at war, however has Obama said we are at war? If he has who are we at war with? Has the president said? Has he muttered the words Radical Islamic Terrorist? Why not? JG, Mozart and Davy claim America is being controlled by Israel. Am I the only one who finds that laughable when Obama can not call those are here now and are plotting to kill us what they are, Radical Islamic Terrorist?
Davy can use all the eloquent thought out words he has in his defense of abortion, yet for all that he can not come to terms with reality and call the victims of the abortion table what they are, Human. How reality based is that?
Insult blog, look at my being called a Klansman, a Nazi, a Con-servative, right wing nut etc. Look at Hansen's and recent Mozart posts and tell me who insulted who. Read Hansen's last post more profanity more threats. Are you offended by that or do I got it coming cause I disagree with liberalism and dare to say so, dare to ask questions whose answers might embarrass them? Or are you so offended by the very idea of someone questioning liberalism that you too feel I have it coming cause I'm the enemy?
Moderate this blog is up to its owner who has bravely stood by his 1st Adm rights. Who has called for censorship? The liberals who post here.
Victor, one thing you can do is to link your name to something thus preventing someone "stealing your name" and posting under your name. ( example would be the post by Hansen? About global warming). If Hansen had done as TP and recommended he do and link his name this type of name stealing would end. That he chooses not to if as he says it makes him so angry, must be for his unknown reasons.
What's the question you want me to answer?
At 10:46 AM, Blogger Dave Dubya said...
The question was directed at TP, but no conservative is willing to answer it. Here is the question with context:
Are you aware of the arrest, humiliation and imprisonment of women who suffer a miscarriage in El Salvador where the same policy that you embrace is in place?
They are being charged with murder. Is this what you mean by "truly pro-life"? It is in fact anti-choice, anti-freedom and anti-equality.
Be thankful you will never suffer such inequality of rights as the loss of control of who you are, and who you choose to be.
Some things are best left between a woman and her God. You and I and the Republican Party and the government are not, and should not be, in this relationship.
And you whine about the government coming between you and your doctor? Please.
How much of that hated government control over your life is anything near being forced by the government to bear the child of your rapist? Be honest. When anti-choicers whine about being "oppressed" by Obamacare, or "Socialism" or anything else, they are hypocrites wishing to impose their beliefs and choices unto others.
At 10:53 AM, Blogger Dave Dubya said...
Now for some questions from Snowflake Chuckie.
has Obama said we are at war? If he has who are we at war with? Has the president said? Has he muttered the words Radical Islamic Terrorist? Why not?
Smart guy, huh? Let him wonder about these questions. Did Obama order the attack that killed bin-Laden? Does Obama have a drone program? Did Obama say we were launching air attacks and sending support to Iraq to fight ISIS? Has Obama mentioned ISIS?
If someone won't answer these questions, his stupid questions should be ignored.
Chuck -
:Various thoughts:
First, I was merely pointing out an example of a right-wing meme that strongly made the rounds during the presidency of G.W. Bush, that is, it was wrong to criticize the president during a time of war (war with Afghanistan, Iraq, war on terror, whatever). Wasn't saying you said that, but was pointing out the general hypocrisy of a so-called "principle" that changed with the next administration. There are many more inconsistent "principles" that get trotted out and I have to put "principles" in quotes because they are subject to change so easily.
As for name twisting, you do it, Dave does it, among others. And no, I don't think it's right. For instance, Dave's (published) name is "Dave", not "Davey" (in an attempt to make him seem more of a child, I guess). Likewise, your name is "Chuck", not "Snowflake". IMO, this kind of juvenile crap serves no purpose. People think they're cute when they do it, but it really just serves to show a certain level of immaturity.
And you say you're going to "fight fire with fire". How helpful is that? Seriously? Well, it's a good way to vent, I suppose, but not much more. Better, as Steinbeck said in "The Grapes of Wrath", go stick your head in the river and scream. (paraphrased)
Your idea is a good one, using a linked name. Maybe I'll set that up, but to tell you the truth, I'm not sure it's worth it.
The question I wanted you to answer was the one I (and Dave) raised about the rise of right-wing extremism. That is, do you think it's true that - since 9/11 - more Americans have been killed by acts of right-wing American extremism than by Muslims? Remember, this conclusion comes from the United States Military Academy’s Combating Terrorism Center, the Global Terrorism Database maintained by the Start Center at the University of Maryland, and also from a survey of law enforcement agencies around the country. You may choose to disbelieve their conclusions, and if so, why?
:End of various thoughts for now:
I've read several times the claim of Daves that you have repeated. Yours is the first time it has been framed as a question
First I checked the source While it is from the source as you state, upon further review I question the political motivation and background of its author(s).
Interestingly no names of the right wing extremists groups nor is their definition of the terms given. So who are they talking about that they fear? The numbers claimed to have been killed by these groups, when and where have these groups murdered ?
So to directly answer your question I have serious doubts about the accuracy of these claims because for the reasons I've just listed
At 7:54 PM, Blogger Dave Dubya said...
I have serious doubts about the accuracy of these claims
Of course he does.
I question the political motivation and background of Chuckie, for to him the Republicans are infallible, and his bubble dismisses all information not provided by his Party.
...right-wing extremists averaged 337 attacks per year in the decade after 9/11, causing a total of 254 fatalities, according to a study by Arie Perliger, a professor at the United States Military Academy’s Combating Terrorism Center. The toll has increased since the study was released in 2012.
Does anybody expect Snowflake Chuckie to explain the "political motivation" of West Point!
How about that liberal socialist agenda of the Police Executive Research Forum?
These are sources cited by the authors Chuckie seems to think, without explanation, have "political motivation".
Oh, that's right. They're not FOX or Limbaugh, who clearly have no "political motivation", amirite?
ere are examples Chuckie will ignore.
In 2012, a neo-Nazi named Wade Michael Page entered a Sikh temple in Wisconsin and opened fire, killing six people and seriously wounding three others. Mr. Page, who died at the scene, was a member of a white supremacist group called the Northern Hammerskins.
In another case, in June 2014, Jerad and Amanda Miller, a married couple with radical antigovernment views, (And part of the "Cliven Bundy Militia") entered a Las Vegas pizza restaurant and fatally shot two police officers who were eating lunch. On the bodies, they left a swastika, a flag inscribed with the slogan “Don’t tread on me” and a note saying, “This is the start of the revolution.” Then they killed a third person in a nearby Walmart.
Jim David Adkisson entered the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church and killed two people and wounded six others during the presentation of a children’s musical.
Adkisson targeted the church, Still wrote in the document obtained by WBIR-TV, Channel 10, “because of its liberal teachings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country, and that he felt that the Democrats had tied his country’s hands in the war on terror and they had ruined every institution in America with the aid of media outlets.”
Adkisson told Still that “he could not get to the leaders of the liberal movement that he would then target those that had voted them in to office.”
Inside the house, officers found “Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder” by radio talk show host Michael Savage, “Let Freedom Ring” by talk show host Sean Hannity, and “The O’Reilly Factor,” by television talk show host Bill O’Reilly.
Adkisson is Chuckie's kind of guy all the way.
Every one of these terrorists have the identical "political motivation" as Snowflake Chuckie, our own Right Wing terrorist supporter. He even has "serious doubts" such a thing exists!
Same with climate change. Rush and FOX are the unbiased experts, amirite?
There is no reasoning with extremists and fanatics like Snowflake Chuckie.
My answer:
Yes, I am offended by it. And no, I don't think you deserve it b/c you disagree, nor for any other reason. Unfortunately, James' post above (which I find ugly and vile) is all too common on the internet today.
There another blog I like to read - - and they too have a comments section that you can use anonymously or logged in. Sometimes their content is political, too. But their comments section is nowhere near the sewer that Tom's comments section has become. As the owner has mentioned before, they do perform moderation and perhaps that helps keep the worst of it away. Yeah, it's not "total free speech" I suppose, but after all, we are like guests in someone's house (their blog) and I understand when they insist that we don't vomit on the rug.
At 11:27 PM, Blogger Chuck Morre said...
Well Victor, I hope you see what has happened every time I've been civil in my disagreement. Or offer my answer to a question. Like I said Dave Hansen or Mozart will follow my post with something like he did above
Do you understand fire with fire?
I hope you added up the tragic number of mass murders that Dave listed
And compare that to the numbers Murdered by Islamic Terrorists. Staring with Ft Hood through Wednesday of this week
So who should we be more afraid of?
Good talking with you Victor hope we can do more of same.
At 12:05 AM, Blogger Dave Dubya said...
As I said those were examples, not a complete list. Chuckie is dishonestly distracting again.
Chuckie won't accept any numbers anyway. Snowflake Chuckie won't explain the "political motivation" of West Point!
How about that liberal socialist agenda of the Police Executive Research Forum?
Run Chuckie, run. The facts are against you. Better distract and blame some black people.
His fellow Right Wing extremists have STILL killed more Americans since 9-11 than the Muslim terrorists.
So who should we be more afraid of?
Those who think like Chuckie are as dangerous as those who think like Muslim terrorists.
At 8:45 AM, Blogger Dave Dubya said...
I suppose we should thank Chuckie for proving correct this assessment:
They are convinced of the righteousness of their beliefs. They now have the internet and 24/7 Right Wing/Republican corporate media reinforcing these beliefs.
The first Big Lie required to support the propaganda is also what all cults do. They tell their people to trust no source of information but their own. They incessantly re-brand corporate media as "liberal media". (And like a cult, even cite the "political motivation" of West Point and Police Executive Research Forum in order to reject their information.)
"Trust us, not the evil liberal media".
Once that indoctrination is set, the rest is all downhill. The far Right propaganda machine now has immense control over what their believers think.
At 11:16 AM, Blogger Chuck Morre said...
Hell Davy I'd just like a list of the extremely right wing groups that you claim are growing!
At 11:38 AM, Blogger Dave Dubya said...
The Southern Poverty Law Center counted 784 active hate groups in the United States in 2014. Only organizations and their chapters known to be active during 2014 are included.
Now explain the "political motivation" of West Point!
How about that liberal socialist agenda of the Police Executive Research Forum?
Only an asshole would refuse to return an answer.
At 1:37 PM, Blogger Dave Dubya said...
Crickets, of course.
Say, I'm beginning to suspect Chuckie's "political motivation" is to promote the Republican agenda by denying, distorting, deflecting, and distracting from all efforts to convey truths that impede the far Right agenda.
He has no answers, and no ability to process information not approved by his party.
He's one of the far Right authoritarian personalities who want a one-party dictatorship and end to democracy.
Therefor he MUST deny, distort, deflect and distract from the fact that Right wing terrorists have killed more Americans since 9-11 than Muslim terrorists.
Imagine that.
