OCCUPY WALL STREET

"But I'll tell you what they don't want. They don't want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don't want well-informed, well-educated people capable of critical thinking. They're not interested in that. That doesn't help them. That's against their interests. They don't want people who are smart enough to sit around the kitchen table and figure out how badly they're getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard thirty fucking years ago. You know what they want? Obedient workers - people who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork - but dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly shittier jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, reduced benefits, the end of overtime and the vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it.

"And now, they're coming for your Social Security. They want your fucking retiremen
t money! They want it back so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street. And you know something? They'll get it! They'll get it all, sooner or later, because they own this fucking place. It's a big club and you ain't in it. You and I are not in the Big Club."

George Carlin

If they ever create a monument to George Carlin, those words should be etched in marble at the base of the statue of him.

You say you want a revolution? Guess what. It's here. Get the fuck out of the way.

Me and my old partner in chaos and confusion, the legendary Don Hickok (photo on the left) will be heading down to merrie olde Manhattan this week to take part in the historic occupation of Wall Street. If life is to gain any meaning through the living of it, generally it's a good rule of thumb to be where history is being made at any given moment. That being the case, where else would you expect to find us? Looking through the window at Rockefeller Center while the Today Show is being broadcast? I've got better things to do and better places to be thank you very much. As Chris Hedges put it so eloquently in a column posted on truthdig this past Thursday:

"There are
no excuses left. Either you join the revolt taking place on Wall Street and in the financial districts of other cities across the country or you stand on the wrong side of history. Either you obstruct, in the only form left to us, which is civil disobedience, the plundering by the criminal class on Wall Street and accelerated destruction of the ecosystem that sustains the human species, or become the passive enabler of a monstrous evil. Either you taste, feel and smell the intoxication of freedom and revolt or sink into the miasma of despair and apathy. Either you are a rebel or a slave."

"Either you are a rebel or a slave." Well put. There is no in-between. Damn! Wish I'd said that!

It would seem that the white noise that has been spewing from the plutocracy's castle-in-the-sky lo these thirty years has finally awakened the sleeping giant of the American Left.
If they think they can put a stop to this revolution - through violence or intimidation - they obviously don't know much about history. Revolutions are unstoppable. Just ask Tzar Nicholas the Second. Just ask King Louis XVI - 0r Momar Khadafi. Putting a halt to a revolution is about as easy as trying to stop the sun from setting in the west this evening. Best of luck to them.

If you haven't heard what is now happening in New York's financial district, you are completely absolved. Although today marks the beginning of the third week of this protest, the so-called "liberal media" has pretty much ignored it. Had this been a hundred-or-so Tea partiers picketing the offices of the ACLU it would have been a different story; the coverage would have been round the clock. But thousands of people have been descending on Wall Street since September 17 and - with the exception of the New York papers, MSNBC and a handful of other outlets - it's like this isn't even happening. But it is happening. The billion dollar shit-hammer has hit the trillion dollar fan.

This should
have happened twenty-five years-ago, but better late than never I suppose. The fact that it's finally happening is good enough for me. What took us so long to get our act together?

Unlike the Tea party spectacle (which was created and financed by FOX Noise and the Koch brothers) this is a real, honest-to-goodness grass roots movement. It's only a matter of hours before the right-wing scream machine puts out a statement blaming the whole thing on a plot cooked up by Rachel Maddow, Barbara Streisand, Ed Asner and the Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Company. I can see Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh chartering several busloads of counter-demonstrators - "real Americans" - to come in and bust some commie/hippie he
ads. But in the long run, what is said or done to put this fire out will be akin to fighting an inferno with a bottle of Perrier water. This is for keeps, baby!

Since the voters of this country foolishly handed over the reins of executive power to a feeble-minded, failed "B" movie actor a generation ago, the rape and plunder of America's financial infrastructure has been going on at full speed. Politicians of both parties rigged the laws in order to make the theft perfectly legal. That mournful chiming that is now emanating from deep within Wall Street is the death knell of the orgy that the plutocrats thought would never end. Americans are taking their country and their economy back. As my gal Rachel said the other night on her exce
llent MSNBC program:

"Rich people are not the reason for a good economy - they are the result."

Dag nap it! Another great quote I wish I had cooked up!

It's times like this that I wish I never left New York City. Still, getting down there is not too tricky. Brother Pete and I own an apartment on the northwest corner of 52nd Street and 8th Avenue and I can stay there for days-at-a-time, at very little expense. If ever there was a time to be in the Big Apple, this is it. Come to think about it, I might just camp out with the protesters - roasting mickeys and singing campfire songs:

A hundred bottle
s of beer on the wall
A hundred bottles of beeeeeer!!!!

Sing around the campfire
Join the Campfire Girrrrrls!

That ought to be fun.

You say you wanna revolution? Well, you know, we all wanna change the world. Get ready for some serious change, friends. Get ready to face the dawn. I'll see you in Manhattan. This is gonna be REALLY cool!

Protesters sought to attract 20,000 people to "flood into lower Manhattan, set up beds, kitchens, and peaceful barricades, and occupy Wall Street for a few months," according to the Occupy Wall Street website. They fell short on numbers--it appeared that fewer than 500 protestors gathered over the weekend, and roughly 200 remained by Monday morning. Those who came did manage to tie up Wall Street briefly.

Matt Parica, 17, Maywood, N.J., student
"I came here to occupy Wall Street. I'm pissed off that corporations can control our country however they want because of their monetary influence. I just wish Jefferson's Guardian was here so that he could autograph my Che Guevera t-shirt."

Mina Kudler-Flam, 19, Middletown, Conn., student
"There needs to be change from the people, by the people, so we can have more equality just like Dave Dubya talks about on his blog."

Aron Kay, 61, New York City, activist
"Right now, I say it's a class war. The mayor was right when he said there was danger of riot. I just wish Ellis D had showed up. He usually has the best pot."

Greg Hauser, 21, Pittsburgh, student
"I'm tired of corporations and banks having their greedy hands on our country. I think this is a good way to voice our opinions just like Tom Degan and his followers do on 'The Rant'."

Name Brand Corporations help Fuel the Fire

The protesters fed on bagels, Skippy peanut butter, Dunkin Donuts coffee and pizza over the course of the weekend. Ramati Lilienthal, 19, said, "America runs on Dunkin' but protesters run on Skippy."

I think it's A LOT of a pity that the protest is being subliminally sidelined by the publicity from the protesters themselves, or that fraction of them who prepare the hippyish/ new constructivist graphics of the poster above.

What that should be, to capture the attention and sympathy of even a large minority of US citizens, is firstly, for colors, Red, White & Blue; secondly, the stylised naked worker, hammer in hand, sword in the other, is completely foolishly referencing the early 20th century,in Italy, Germany, & USSR. What was the point of that? Is this supposed to be Poster Art, or to be a real information conveying poster?

Re-capture the 'American Dream', identify that YOU (protesters) are the real American patriots, because you stand for 'the common man/ woman'.

Pseudo-Left bullshit (as the poster is) does not cut this mustard.

We handed a multitrillion-dollar economy to a community organizer and now we are surprised that it led to more taxes, more bureaucracy, more regulation, more barnacles on an already rusting hull?

Hard statism is usually murmured in soft, soothing, beguiling terms:

Regulation is about cleaner air, healthier restaurants, safer children's toys. Sounds so nice. But federal regulation alone sucks up 10% of GDP. That's to say, Americans take the equivalent of the Canadian economy and toss it down the toilet just in complying with federal paperwork. Obama and the great toxic alphabet soup of federal regulation — EPA, OSHA, SEC, DHSS — want to take that 10% and crank it up to 12%, 14%, 15%.

Occidental, Columbia, Harvard Law, a little light community organizing, a couple of years timeserving in a state legislature: That's what America's elites regard as an impressive resume rather than a bleak indictment of contemporary notions of "accomplishment."

Obama would not have withstood scrutiny in any society with a healthy, skeptical press. Yet, like the high-rolling Wall Street moneybags, they failed to do due diligence.

Anonymous said, Mr. Carlin is wrong about who took our S.S.$$$, it was the govt, not Wall Street."

When George Carlin said those words (BTW, he has been dead for some years now) the plan du jour was to privatize social security. That would have individual accounts for people who have paid into Social Security, most of which would have been invested in stocks and bonds (Wall Street).

So what do you do with someone who goes to collect Social Security and finds that he invested it all with Bernie Madoff who lost it all and is sitting in jail for the next 150 years.

Perhaps JTF did not understand the thrust of Tom's Rent about Occupying Wall Street. Tom led off the Rant with a great quote from George Carlin. I rank George Carlin up there with Will Rogers of 1930's fame.

Anonymous dismissed George Carlin as being wrong about Wall Street and Social Security when in fact Carlin's quote was made during a time when there was serious consideration of privatizing Social Security, which would have put SS within the reach of Wall Street.

JTF's rebuttal that the Social Security "Trust Fund" is gone is the stalking horse that is being used to justify dismantling Social Security, which has been the Holy Grail for conservatives from the day SS was enacted in 1935.

If the SS Trust Fund is well and truly gone then a different bunch of thieves stole it - Congress. And let's not try to blame this on our current President because the President cannot spend any money unless it is appropriated by Congress.

Let's look back to 1983 when Bob Dole led the charge to "fix" Social Security because of the crisis expected to start in 2011, which would be fueled by the 1946 to 1964 baby boomers. I confess I am partly responsible for that crisis, having sired five children from 1957 to 1964. Since 1983 worker contributions and emloyer matching were gradually increased and now they extend to $106,800 of yearly compensation and a combined 12.4% contribution to the SS Trust Fund.

That 1983 increase provided enough money for Social Security to be adequately funded until 2042. By 2042 the youngest baby boomers will be 78 years old, and the oldest baby boomers will be 96 years old. In 2042 most of the earlier baby boomers will be dead. and the others will be dropping like flies.

The current "Great Recession" has decreased SS contributions so the SS fund will "only" be solvent until 2036 (hint - that is twenty-five years from now). That means the oldest baby boomers will be only age 90 in the year 2036. I believe this is a blip that will disappear when (if ???) we get the economy going again.

Unless you are willing to bring criminal theft charges against every living current and ex- Member of Congress for stealing the SS Trust Fund (wouldn't that be a circus?) keep your hands off Social Security.

Ron Baldwin said..."JTF's rebuttal that the Social Security "Trust Fund" is gone is the stalking horse that is being used to justify dismantling Social Security, which has been the Holy Grail for conservatives from the day SS was enacted in 1935."

Nope that's not what I said! Again for the record what I said was if there is any failure in the S. S. fund it's not due to Wall Street, it's due to the people who RAN the fund. And that would be the political party who from 1954 to 1994 controlled Congress, the Democratic Party. FORTY YEARS.
No straw horse there Ron, just simply history. Further nothing in my post brought up the current President. If you really believe there is plenty of money in the S.S. Fund, explain why currently it takes 1.75 workers to pay for the benefits of one person on S.S.?
The Fund was raided by LBJ to pay for HIS two wars! The Vietnam war and the War on Poverty and has never be paid back.
So Tom, Ron march on Wall Street, have a riot, get a nose full of tear gas or pepper spray, carry signs, chant chant's but your marching on the wrong street! It's the party of the liberal choice that has caused our current discomfort, the Democrat Party.

As for the person who invested their S.S. with Madoff, the only reason they did so was they were greedy and wanted the biggest returns on their investment they could get. That is pure greed, right? Services them right for being so greedy of you apply the current liberals mind set.

Fine post, Tom, and while in the city watch out for the bully cops and their pepper spray.

Ours begins this Thursday, October 6th. It's been in the planning for months, so it should be a good one! There are many who have committed to attend, including me, and I hope it's as prolific as the Wall Street Occupation. Like the protest up there, our D.C. gathering will last until the last person unplugs the amplifier and leaves. Not before.

As you said, if a dozen teabaggers stage a protest, the corporate media's all over it. However, like the Wall Street Occupation at first, it will ignore our "right to assembly" as if it never happened. I've participated in many demonstrations in Washington over the last few years, and never have I seen production vans or news cameras from the mainstream media. It's an omission by design. It seems the strategy of staying in place, for an occupation, is the only means to getting the media to report the event.

Tom, be safe, be vigilant, and be nonviolent. Best of luck!

Why are Obama's illegal alien aunt and uncle living in this country on welfare. Mr. President..... when will you start being your families keeper.

You make a fortune off of a couple books that many people believe you didn't write and you can't send a couple bucks to your poverty stricken family members.

My, my Mr. President....... aren't you embarassed going out preaching the "brother's keeper" line when everyone in the world knows you dine on $150.00 a pound steak while many of your family members may not know where their next meal is coming from.

How can a self-proclaimed Occupy Wall Street protester simultaneously support the man whose 2008 campaign was bankrolled by Wall Street, whose 2012 campaign is reliant on Wall Street to an even greater extent, and whose cabinet was filled with Wall Street operatives??"

Do you on the left who despise the right and rich, see you are being used by the usual suspects, the mega-rich foundations and elitists, George Soros, The Ruckus Society, the Tides Foundation and the Ford Foundation??

Occupy Wall Street is the greatest threat yet to the forces opposed to democracy.

Soon the demonization, like we see from the fascist-inclined FOX(R)parrots here, will be from corporate media.

Our reactionary defenders of minority rule, aka Republicans, are completely wrong about who Wall Street supports. They hedge their bets by buying off both parties but they are clearly giving more to Republicans. And not just now. They were pumping 7 of every 10 dollars to Republicans for the 2010 election.

(Sounds just like Perry's "Texas miracle".)

Instead they are programmed to attack unions, public employees, teachers, and every other non-wealty American who dares to think for himself, who dares to vote against the party of minority rule.

When fascism comes to America, "conservatives" will celebrate their victory over "socialism", while living in more sqaulor than ever before.

But they will already have been indoctrinated on who to blame. We liberals are the equivalent of the German Jews in fascist Amerika.

Obama – $44,750

When the Right is wrong, they are very wrong.

At 4:25 PM, Blogger Tom Degan said...

Good one, Dave!

Is it wrong to compare them to the Nazis? That depends on what year were talking about. To compare the GOP to the Nazi movement circa 1939 when they were already sending the Jewish people to the concentration camps is (to put it as mildly as possible) a bit of a stretch. But comparing them to the party of 1928 is not much of a stretch at all. In fact it would a be pretty accurate comparison judging by the levels of extremism exhibited by both groups in their respective time periods. Remember, this was a gradual evolution.

The right wing of this country is evolving - devolving - into something perfectly grotesque. It's only a matter of time before the more mainstream, moderate Republicans (Do they even exist anymore?) wash their hands of them. By that time in might be too late.

On that happy note....

Throwing Stones
(Weir Barlow)

Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free
Dizzy with eternity.
Paint it with a skin of sky, brush in some clouds and sea
Call it home for you and me.
A peaceful place or so it looks from space
A closer look reveals the human race.
Full of hope, full of grace, is the human face.
But afraid, we may our home to waste.
There's a fear down here we can't forget hasn't got a name just yet
Always awake, always around singing ashes to ashes all fall down.
Now watch as the ball revolves and the nighttime calls
And again the hunt begins and again the bloodwind calls
By and by again, the morning sun will rise
But the darkness never goes from some men's eyes.
It strolls the sidewalks and it rolls the streets
Stalking turf, dividing up meat.
Nightmare spook, piece of heat, you and me, you and me.
Click, flashblade in ghetto night. Rudies looking for a fight.
Rat cat alley roll them bones. Need that cash to feed that jones
And the politicians throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down.
Commissars and pin-striped bosses role the dice
Any way they fall guess who gets to pay the price.
Money green or proletarian gray, selling guns instead of food today.
So the kids they dance, they shake their bones
While the politicians throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down.
Heartless powers try to tell us what to think
If the spirit's sleeping, then the flesh is ink.
History's page, it is thusly carved in stone
The future's here, we are it, we are on our own.
If the game is lost then we're all the same
No one left to place or take the blame.
We will leave this place an empty stone
Or this shinning ball of bule we can call our home
So the kids they dance, they shake their bones
While the politicians are throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down.
Shipping powders back and forth
Singing "black goes south while white comes north"
And the whole world full of petty wars
Singing "I got mine and you got yours."
And the current fashions set the pace.
Lose your step, fall out of grace.
And the radical he rant and rage, Singing "someone got to turn the page"
And the rich man in his summer home,
Singing "Just leave well enough alone"
But his pants are down, his cover's blown
And the politicians are throwing stones
So the kids they dance they shake their bones
Cause its all too clear we're on our own
Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free
It's dizzying, the possibilities. Ashes, Ashes all fall down.

Being on record for voting for another failed stimulus plan to create jobs at a cost of hundreds of thousands per job just doesn't resonate with the Independents. Harry has finally realized Obama is an empty suit and will try to prevent Democrats from walking the plank again like they did for the Messiah to get ObamaCare passed.

Obama drags down Democrat in West Virginia governor’s race Washington Post

President Obama’s unpopularity is threatening Democrats’ hold on the governor’s mansion in West Virginia.

Sources close to Tuesday’s special election for the remaining year on now-Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-W.Va.) term as governor say the race continues to move in favor of Republican nominee Bill Maloney, who appears to be winning over the many undecided voters in the state. The race is now looking more and more like a toss-up, though Democrats remain confident they will pull it out in the end.

Regardless of where operatives come down on the final results, both agree that the reason for its narrowing is simple: Obama

Nance is right, you do really big rants exceptionally well. I've been appalled at the lack of media coverage of OWS but pleased that it hasn't slowed the movement. OWS protests have hit my home, Raleigh, NC and neighboring Durham as of this past weekend.

Dave Dubya,

I won't declare you a Communist like you are complaining about being called on your blog, but you definitely belong to the general species "ism":

Liberalism, Socialism, Marxism, Communism, Progressivism or Nazism, etc; they’re fundamentally all the same – just separated by varying degrees of evil. Every time someone wants to “control” the population, bad stuff happens. The game-plan is always the same too, Social Engineering through Wealth Redistribution and fueled by Class-Hate.

For the moment, I stop short of calling the GOP-TP "Nazis," but to deny their "fascist" tendencies/characteristics is to deny the existence of the Pacific Ocean. It's all there and heading toward us like a giant tsunami. It's up to we the people to stop it, which is why I support the protesters.

Even little ole red-neck Nashville is having an Occupy protest this Saturday!!! Before you even ask, no - I'm not participating because I haven't been able to keep an ounce of food in my system for 4 days - but there will be others. Good luck to all of you who do get out. Peace.
