Happy New Year (I Hope)
I gotta feeling '23 is gonna be a weird year....
There once was a man named Guy Lombardo who in the thirties was the leader of the schmaltziest band of the entire Big Band Era.. His arrangements were exasperatingly lame; his lead vocalist, his brother Carmen, (aside from Glenn Miller's main singer, Ray Eberle) was the worst of the period. At a time in the mid-seventies when some of the greatest leaders of the swing era had been consigned to the cultural dust bin (Charlie Barnett, Artie Shaw, Cab Calloway, etc.) Guy Lombardo was still busy and making lots of money up until his death in 1977. The reason for this is simply because one of the only major hits he ever had (Auld Lang Syne) had become so closely associated with New Year's Eve, Guy could always be counted on to be in the spotlight on national television every December 31. It was an honor that, I'm sure, many of the old timers must have resented. To this day, Lombardo's recording of Auld Lang Syne can be heard every year. That's just a minor historical curiosity I wanted to share with you. Don't attach too much importance to it.
It's a bit early for this, but I want to wish you all a safe and sweet new year. Happy? There's always room for optimism, but I have every reason to be pessimistic. Given the train-wreck of the new congress which will be sworn in in just a few short days, I can't offer you any assurance that our democracy won't give way in 2023 - that's how weird things have become in recent years.

With Republicans set to take control of the House, GOP congressional leaders have promised to hold President Biden, his administration, and federal bureaucrats to account and get to the truth on key issues. But after a series of dragged-out investigations into former President Trump and other Republicans, CNN had suddenly had their fill of congressional inquiries with correspondent Randi “Kush” Kaye scoffing at Republicans during Monday’s Anderson Cooper 360.
At the heart of the planned investigation, are dozens of suspicious activity reports that Republicans claim, banks filed, related to Hunter Biden's financial activities.
As the incoming majority in the House, Republicans can use subpoena power to get those reports, as well as subpoena foreign entities, and others, who did business, with Hunter Biden.
Without evidence, Kaye claimed “There is no evidence Joe Biden did anything wrong. And Hunter Biden has denied any wrongdoing.” Of course, this omits questions about the 10 percent “for the big guy” and Joe’s false claims about never speaking with his son about his business dealings.
Maybe the pistol packin' mammas of the one eighteenth will have a shootout. Maybe Raffensperger can find the votes. Maybe they send in the fake electors.
