Tempest in a Tea Pot Dome

It can no longer be denied. The administration of George W. Bush is, for all intents and purposes, over. It's only a matter of time before he and Dick Cheney are forcibly removed from office via the constitutionally mandated process of impeachment. This week's revelation that the "evidence" of Saddam Hussein's mythical weapons of mass destruction program was manipulated by then Undersecretary of Defence, Douglas Feith in order to frighten a gullible American public into signing off on the stupidest foreign policy blunder in American history - is the final writing on a wall already covered in lies. This is big - really, really big - and it's only going to get better... Excuse me...I meant, "worse". Honest, I did!
.
When one couples this latest scandal with all that is being revealed in the Scooter Libby trial, it's almost as if we've been given two tasty dishes for the price of one. It really is gift that keeps giving, is it not? The initial claims of Bob Woodward that the outting of Valerie Plaime's classified CIA identity was "laughable" as an offence or that it was nothing more than "a tempest in a teapot" according to David Broder of the Washington Post - are proving to be just a tad hasty. Crimes have been committed - serious crimes. People are going to go to prison for a very long time - or at least until they receive their eleventh hour pardons from Bush.
.
I can see it now: there's the president of the United States, secure in his bunker, deep beneath the White House, in the final hours of this nightmare of an administration. He's frantically signing pardons - thousands of pardons - he's overjoyed at the scam he's been able to pull off; "Hee! Hee! Hee! Ah've beat the fuckin' system to a pulp", he drawls as he giggles uncontrollably in that hideous Beavus and Butthead way of his. Just at that moment, an extremely nasty reality hits him on the head like the proverbial trillion dollar shithammer. A trembling Alberto Gonzalez waiting until his own pardon has been firmly secured, gently, hesitantly tries to explain to the First Fool that a president cannot legally pardon himself. In an instant, the blood drains from Bush's face, his eyes bulge and he starts foaming at the mouth. Poor little Alberto, fearing for what's left of his miserable life makes a beeline for the door - but it's too late - in a fit of primitive, blind rage, Bush pounds the pathetic little bastard senseless. Oh, this is going to get extremely ugly, campers! Extremely ugly, indeed.
.
Our collective hat must be tipped to the great Chris Matthews of MSNBC. In his grand jury testimony Scooter Libby testified that what enraged the vice president's office more than anything were the reports coming in every evening on Hardball. They were actually having entire transcriptions made of the show! Other than Joe Wilson, no one else was questioning the administration's claim that Saddam had tried to obtain yellow cake uranium from Niger. The evidence presented to the public were obvious forgeries - documents "signed" by a Nigerian official who had been out of power for over a decade, for instance. The corporate news media, to their eternal shame, were merely acting as stenographers for the White House propaganda machine. Matthews, to his eternal credit, wasn't buying it. That his program is, at this moment, still trailing FOX News in the ratings is inexcusable. On Friday evening, while MSNBC and CNN were covering the Feith and Libby revelations, FOX was covering the death of Anna Nicole Smith - and nothing else. They want to distract the people from the issues that really matter by focusing on "info-tainment". Is it any wonder that the faithful viewers of that network are the stupidest people on the planet? I report - You decide. Fair and balanced, you know what I talking about?
.
The clock is ticking, folks. Their house of marked cards is beginning to crumble. The sun is setting on what is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the most appallingly criminal presidency in the history of the republic. This administration, I believe, will not survive the year. Maybe I'm wrong but my instinct tells me that I'm not. I sincerely believe that, come New Years Day 2008, Bush will be out of power and on his way to federal prison for the rest of his life. Cheney, given the fragile state of his health, will probably be able to avoid the same, well deserved fate. Judging by his recent interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, it is obvious that he is a deeply sick and disturbed man; a man on the very precipice of existence. That fatal heart attack that we've all been expecting for years is liable to come any moment. If he's forced to testify at the Scooter Libby trial, he'll be dead in a month - count on it - the stress of being forced to tell the truth under penalty of perjury will be too much to bear. He's liable to even drop dead right there in the courtroom. Is that a cruel thing to say? After half a million Iraqi men, women and little children having been murdered for no reason - I ask you - what's one more dead body? Please.
.
There is more evidence than can even be accurately catalogued why Bush and Cheney need to be impeached and hauled off to Leavenworth Prison in an ox cart. But that's not going to happen until we demand that the Democrats show some courage and get the process in motion. No more bullshit! We must demand that these disgusting bastards and bitches (Hi, Condi!) be held accountable for their crimes against the people of the United States in general and the people of Iraq in particular.
.
We should expect nothing less.
.
Pray for peace.

So right, Tom.The lies just go on and on. When one lie is exposed they lay another whopper on us to distract the "media" from the last lie.
AND IT WORKS!!!!

I keep hoping this lie will sink the Titanic ship of state but so far nada.
Pray things will get better, I keep thinking they can't worse and then damned if they don't!!!

I get hope from your blog, Tom, every time I read it. Hope for the rage that is coming like a tsunami to tide these murderous terrorists out of the offices they have stolen and prostituted. I am completely mesmerized by the fact that the mainstream media in U.S. in the last few days is focussed on the sad empty life of the nobody Anna Nicole Smith while the beginnings of the rumblings of the tanked U.S. economy is beginning like a tornado on the horizon (housing starts falling, mortgages foreclosing)and the trial of the Scooter are being totally ignored. God save America.
Keep it up Tom.

I wish your predictions would come to pass, Tom. If anyone thought the Mainstream Media still functions as The Fourth Estate, all they have to do is look at the downplaying of these extremely serious revelations in the Libby Trial, and the histrionic hype surrounding Anna Nicole Smith's death. She was a minor starlet, her life a train wreck, her addictions well-known, and her quest for money unending. Yet, one would think by the Media response, that a major American icon had died. Obviously, sex and gossip sell. That is what fuels the Media: rumor, innuendo, big boobs, celebrity antics, and celebrity drug deaths. It is pathetic and insulting. Insulting that is, to those of us who care about the incredible criminal activities of this administration. It is insulting to those of us who care about the fabrications that fueled a flaming inferno in Iraq.It is insulting to those of us who care about the lives of 3,000+ servicemen and women who have died in Iraq. There are actually intelligent human beings who live in this country, and want objective, intelligent reporting of the facts. I am sorry for anyone's untimely death; but to stop the presses for another woeful clelebrity demise is ridiculous. Hardball, Olbermann, and Scarborough all focused on it. I am depressed by the whole Media circus. Even if that is what the majority of pinheaded, SUV-driving, Bud-drinking, Bug-Zapper watching,fad-sucking Americans want, the Media should not lower itself to that level. Ha! They encourage it, feed it, pimp it night and day. The cult of personality is their bread and butter. THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AUTHORIZED THE OUTING OF A CIA OPERATIVE. This is illegal. When the story first came out, hidden on page 10, I knew Cheney was behind it. Why has it taken the Media so long to figure it out?! They keep playing this stupid game of "Oh golly, gee whiz, was the VP really involved?" They then jump on any distraction to keep from reporting the facts and telling the truth to the American public. They continue to give Bush and Cheney a veritable free pass on their innumerable crimes. Now, the New York Times is pushing the story about Iran's involvement in Iraq. Great! Let's have yet another war, destroy another country, kill thousands, and spend money we don't have. Let's do it so the damned newspapers and the networks can make money on more lies and misery.
Meanwhile, Congress is bickering over a resolution that wont deter Bush/Cheney from any warmongering of any kind. It's a spineless piece of paper not worth wiping your fanny on; and they can't even agree on that. The Ship of Fools in Congress refuses to get beyond petty, party game-playing. We have idiots in Congress, crooks in the Whitehouse, and right-wing idealogues in the Supreme Court. "Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right..." Scotty, for God's sake, beam me up!

We can only hope Tom..but I've lived long enough to know that for every credibility gap - there's a gullibility fill.

Sadly, far too many Americans are bordering on comatose when it comes to the real issues in front of them (I do not want to call them willfully blind, I'll give some wiggle room.)

We can hope that something wakes them out of their tunnel vision soon. May that "something" not be a train!

The hype surrounding Anna Niclole Smith's death has a purpose, we are to be so titillated by the scandal that we pay no attention to the Libby revelations.
A reason for the vituperation could be that Anna's dear departed husband was a member of the infamous Koch oil family of Oklahoma who were charged with some pretty nefarious dealings and are also tied to the Bush family thru one Koch brother's marriage to "Doro" Bush, dumbya's sister.

Tom, I can only hope that you are right on this one. I had the feeling from the beginning (just like Dubya, it was in my gut) that the Libby trial could indeed begin to bring this administration down. The questions is whether or not we can get these idiots out of office before they do something stupid in Iran. Chances on that are slim; it appears that too many preparations are already in place to stop it now, and the Bushiveks keep hoping that one crisis after another will keep them in office.

Along with you, it is my sincere desire that these idiots will be out of office and in prison by the end of the year. Bush and Cheney; offspring of Hitler.

You've done a great job (again!) of telling the truth. The caricature of Bush is really priceless. And your faith is refreshing.

I too want very much to believe that justice will soon be visited on this corrupt administration. If by some chance it isn't, it frightens me to think what future administrations will be capable of getting away with.

I read about some low level officer in Iraq who got convicted of taking a $50,000 bribe for fixing a contract. Yet $12 billion has simply vanished over there and so far no one in this administration has had to shoulder the blame for that.

I believe that once the first step is been taken toward impeachment there will be an avalanche of accusations coming from all directions. The pendulum has to swing the other way at some point and I think we are almost there.

I was watching Hardball last night, and the point was made that even if Congress passes laws, Bush has these Signing Statements, and ignores the law. Then, he has the various agencies ignore the law and fail to enforce it. He and Cheney view the Executive Branch as a Dictatorship. They reject any kind of oversight or cooperation with other branches of government, if it goes against their agenda. Surely, this is at odds with Constitutional Law. How can the Media continue to ignore this?! Gonzalez has become nothing more than a Consigliori for Mafia bosses-always making arguments and defending actions that are counter to the very fabric of a Representative Democracy. Bush and Cheney are obviously gearing up for an attack on Iran. I think they will just do it-to hell with Congress and the Voters. I certainly hope I am wrong, but they have sent another big ship to the Persian Gulf.

Hey - great blog----unfortunately, impeachment is never going to happen, because the democrats are just as corrupt and 'weaselish' as the people in office.

They don't have the balls to stand up for anything. They are every bit as disgusting and miserable as Bush and his acolytes.

IMO the iraq war is just a symptom of greater problems in the republic which have been accumulating and been ignored for years.

And to anyone who says love it or leave it -- i already left. and leavibg he US was the best thing ive ever done! What a farce that country is. what a big fucking lie.
