The following are a series of unrelated topics that are loaded, I believe, with plenty of reason but seriously lacking in rhyme. So sue me.

1. It Tolls For Thee

For any politics junkie. the January 6 hearings are the tasty icing on a perfectly rancid and moldy cake.  I always knew that we would come to this day, but I'm only surprised that it didn't happen sooner. Somewhere, I am almost certain, Dick Nixon must be wearing a smile of infinite and eternal serenity. No longer will the old bastard bear the stigma of being at the helm of the most criminal presidential administration in American history. His heirs must be breathing a prolonged sigh of relief as well. His many, well--documented flaws aside, Nixon was perfectly capable of being an able and visionary statesman - a trait that Donald Trump never possessed on his best days. Compared to The Donald, The Trickster is starting to look better and better. It was revealed yesterday that Trump and Rudy Guiliani terrified an honest and humble and poll worker from Georgia - and her mother and grandmother - with a barrage of threats and intimidation. Nixon never would have stooped as low as that.

2. Her Majesty's a Pretty Nice Girl

I don't spend too much time thinking about Queen Elizabeth. In the sixteen years that I've been writing this site, I don't think that I've even mentioned her once. Had I been a British subject, I'm almost certain that I would have been a Republican (which has an entirely different meaning over there, look it up). But given all of the embarrassing scandals that have been dredged up in recent years by Prince Andrew, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, it's a fairly easy bet to assume that none of this has been easy on the poor woman. Her seventieth jubilee - which even I was celebrating (in a lowkey way, of course) - has been marred by the idiocy of her offspring. The Queen recently turned ninety-six; she doesn't need this. Would someone across the pond please tell Andy, Harry and Meghan to keep their profiles as low as possible - at least until the end of the year? Thanks.

3. The Ambition of Mike Pense

In  the previous piece (June 17) I stated that, because of his heroic behavior on January 6, 2021, I would never again utter a critical word against Mike Pense. I need to take a temporary reprieve from that promise. Mike has a lot of useful information that he could share with the January 6 committee, and yet he refuses to testify. Why? Because he is under the deluded impression that he is going to be the GOP nominee in two years; aint that a scream? Someone from withing the Republican party apparatus needs to sit Pense down and explain a few unavoidable realities to him: It's never going to happen so he might as well put the idea out of his mind. He is not testifying because he refuses to anger the half-witted "base" that comprises the followers of Donald Trump. And if Trump is still able to run in the primaries two years from now, Pense's campaign will be as dead as a rusty doornail at the starting gate. Do the right thing and testify, Mike, you'll look better in history. You've already reached the governor's mansion in Indiana and the vice-presidency. Don't let blind ambition get the better of you. Seriously.

So there you have it, kiddies, a few random notes from the global train wreck of 2022. Isn't this an amazing time to be alive?

Strange days indeed!

AFTERTHOUGHT, 6:52 PM:

One of the legacies of the era of Donald Trump is the new reality that it is perfectly acceptable now to say the word "bullshit" on television.

Lenny Bruce would be amused.

We are looking at the biggest and most profound scandal in American history which involves many of the leaders of one of our two political parties and hundreds of its elected officials. We are entering a new phase in the investigation into the unprecedented betrayal of the United States.

Subpoenas were reportedly issued today related to Trump fake elector scheme to: David Shafer, chair of Georgia GOP Brad Carver, Georgia GOP Thomas Lane, Trump campaign aide in Arizona & New Mexico Shawn Flynn, Trump campaign aide in Michigan.

FBI Search warrants were served today for the phone of Nevada GOP chairman Michael McDonald A second search warrant was issued for Nevada party secretary James DeGraffenreid, who also signed fake elector document, but FBI agents could not locate him Wednesday, KLAS reported.

The FBI served a search warrant on Michael McDonald, the Republican chairman in Nevada. They seized his phone in relation to an “investigation” into the so-called “fake electors” scheme propagated after the 2020 election.

In December 2020, the 8 News Now I-Team reported the Nevada Republican Party’s six electors signed paperwork signaling their support for former President Donald Trump in a symbolic ceremony devoid of any legal merit, which was held in Carson City and coincided with the official state-sanctioned tally on Dec. 14, 2020.

Given that, what exactly is being investigated here except wrong-think? After all, it was Democrats who pioneered and pursued the idea of “faithless electors” after the 2016 election. Don’t believe me? Well, believe the headlines from the time period, and there are literally dozens of them.

Examples:

In other words, if you are keeping score, the FBI is now targeting top GOP officials just prior to a mid-term election in a heavily contested state in order to investigate something they never investigated when it was being pushed by Democrats. Doesn’t that sound familiar?

That’s the kind of corrupt, two-tiered justice system that currently operates within the United States of America. Hunter Biden can break gun laws, likely violate FARA, and allegedly rake in gobs of cash from influence-peddling schemes overseas, and the FBI won’t raid his home with CNN cameras present. But if you become inconvenient for the left as a Republican, Dir. Christopher Wray and goons will show up ready and willing.

Dems NEVER assembled FAKE electors.

Anonymous: Chirp, chirp,chirp.

Gas prices would be up even if Trump was still in office.

Low-information dupes have no clue how gas prices are set on the global market, and that supply was reduced due to the recession.

Biden had nothing to do with the price of gas.

But Big Oil is raking in record profits by price gouging. Don't blame them, amirite?

Yes, Virginia. Biden did beat Trump in a fair election.

Anonymous lacks the guts and integrity to admit it.

The extent to which liberals have gone bananas over the Dobbs case is a phenomenon that demands explanation. Most liberals, after all, understand that the Court has not banned abortion, or in fact placed any limits on it whatsoever. It has simply remitted the issue of abortion to the political sphere where it was prior to 1973, and where it always has belonged, thus ending a half century of usurpation by the Court.

Moreover, abortion laws in the U.S. have been extremely liberal compared with most countries–almost every country other than North Korea, in fact.

Wow. Today I learned that Europe has more restrictive abortion laws than most of the U.S. did up until this week. https://t.co/h7cvIlIEMN

One of the many ironies of post-Dobbs hysteria was French President Emmanuel Macron denouncing the decision, even though the Mississippi statute that the Court upheld was more permissive, more liberal, than France’s own abortion law.

Most liberals no doubt understand that they now will have to take their case to the voters, and that when the dust settles, American abortion laws will look pretty much like Europe’s. And some states will be extremely permissive–New York, for one, may legalize infanticide, which the states are perfectly free to do. So, once again–why the hysteria?

There are several elements are at work here, but the most basic is that liberals (Democrats) do not want to take the issue of abortion to the voters. They do not want to have to make their case. They do not want to have to argue and persuade. Rather, they want all views opposed to their own to be banned and unheard. Delegitimized.

This is perhaps the dominant fact of 21st Century politics. Liberals don’t want to debate, they don’t want to persuade. They want to censor. They want some higher authority, whether the Supreme Court, Twitter, or corporate America, to declare all views but theirs out of bounds. They don’t want to participate in democratic politics, they want to rule by fiat. For all their wailing about “our democracy,” the last thing liberals want is the actual give and take of a democracy, which usually entails compromise.

The key reason for the Left’s hysteria over Dobbs is liberals, having to argue, to persuade, to run for office, to participate in the messy work of democracy where you don’t always win, is a step backward. They had everything going their way, and now…this.

Viewed in that light, the demonstrations, insurrections, encouragement of assassination of Supreme Court Justices, and arson at Christian maternity centers are understandable.
