UPI, Washington DC - September 20 1969:
John Lennon, the most "far-out" of the Fabulous Beatles, met with President Richard M. Nixon today in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, DC.
During the two-hour meeting Mr. Lennon and the president discussed, among other things, world peace, the famine in Bangla Desh, the aspirations of American youth and the best way of removing resin from a Chinese water-pipe. After presenting Mr. Nixon with a copy of "Two Virgins" a record he made with his Japanese wife, Yoko Ono, the president gave Mr. Lennon a copy of the album, "Mantovani Plays the Music of Victor Herbert and Sigmund Romberg". According to Chief of staff H.R.Haldeman, the two men also shared four tabs of blotter acid.
At the meeting's conclusion Mr. Lennon told the assembled press in the Rose Garden, "He's not a bad fellow deep down, I think. He just needs to expand his mind a little, you know?"
An hour later Mr. Nixon was found by his aid, Charles Colson, under the large conference table in the cabinet meeting room, singing "Everybody's Got Something to Hide 'cept for Me and My Monkey", trying to amputate his own feet with an antique emery board.

I love it - it goes with my idea about his excitement if he could have been here about Obama's presidency and Kerry's near-election...all we are saying...aw, hell...we all know how it goes...
In fact Johns Kerry and Lennon did meet. There is a photograph of the two of them taken in 1972. During the height of their anti-war activism.

For those of you who dig superficial, smug musicians who think we're incredibly interested in their opinions on life, the new John Lennon is a alive - his name is Bono. And, he has a cooler accent and wears way cooler glasses.
Tom, I've never heard of, "Mantovani Plays the Music of Victor Herbert and Sigmund Romberg". Do you have this LP (and if so, why does this not surprise me)?
If it were not for the exception of Yoko, coming from JL, I would only assume it is good...
Truth be told, Johnny. My father had a couple of his records. The only one that ever impressed me was his Christmas album - which was very good - and which I have on reel-to-reel. The rest of his catalog is pretty lame. Very syrupy and uninspiring. But the public loved his music so we must give a tip of the hat to the man. He died in 1980 by the way.
When writing the piece I remembered that Dick Nixon was a STONE COLD FAN of Mantovani. I googled his discography to find the weirdest title I could muster.
"Mantovani Plays the Music of Victor Herbert and Sigmund Romberg" impressed me - to say the least.
I never dreamed I would live to see the day when I'd be writing about Mantovani. See what you've started, Harragin? Let's do Zuccotti Park again.
